This morning our Northwestern State IEEE chapter had the privilege of attending an industry visit at Cleco. Cleco is an electric power company powering thousands of residents and businesses in the central Louisiana area. We learned a lot about the power industry and the day-to-day lives of engineers. Special thank you to Courtney Barron, MBA , Neil LaCroix, Professor Craig R. Caskey, MS, PMP and our other NSU administrators for facilitating future opportunities with Cleco.

Power Wise residential consultant Tony Giacona visited with Building Performance Institute, Inc. CEO Amanda Hatherly while attending the Building Performance Association’s National Home Performance Conference in New Orleans this week, where they joined thousands of weatherization professionals for the latest industry education and networking. Tony is a BPI proctor, BPI-certified as an energy auditor and a quality control inspector and manages the Cleco Power Wise® residential weatherization program.

Andre Guillory, Cleco’s chief customer officer, and Kristen Guillory, Cleco’s chief financial officer, visited the South Louisiana Community College campus in Crowley this past week. During the visit, Cleco was recognized for their ongoing support of the school’s Power Line Worker Program. Andre was able to speak with the school's community advisory board on Cleco's partnership and the importance of having educated and qualified line mechanics entering the workforce. Cleco's grant with SoLAcc will provide scholarships to five students in the Power Line Worker Program, as well as provide supplies and equipment to ensure students receive hands-on, industry-aligned training.

Cleco, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the Clean Air Task Force hosted the Clean Hydrogen Task Force for lunch and a tour of the Cleco Alternative Energy Center in Crowley this month. The Cleco Alternative Energy Center was created in 2012 through a partnership between Cleco and UL Lafayette to focus on and fund projects related to sustainable energy and net zero emissions. In addition to Cleco support, the center receives funding from federal, state and industrial sources.

Jaci Meche, manager of Cleco’s energy efficiency program, was a guest speaker at the Southeastern Electric Exchange’s Rates & Regulation Section Meeting in Virginia Beach. Meche discussed mandated energy efficiency programs at the request of Christina McDowell, Cleco’s director of regulatory filings, who is this year’s SEE section vice chair.

Jennifer Cahill, director of corporate communications at Cleco, has joined the board of directors for Utility Communicators International (UCI). UCI is a group of communication professionals serving utility companies across North America. The executive director and board of directors at UCI represent investor-owned utilities, cooperatives, municipalities and advertising agencies. Jennifer will join the group in Philadelphia for the UCI conference in June.
