We’re looking back at yesterday’s announcement on the Back River! With Maryland Secretary of the Environment Serena McIlwain, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, and other state leaders, we celebrated 21 new community-based projects for the Patapsco River and Back River watersheds! Funding for these projects comes from a settlement to address unauthorized discharges of pollution from the state’s two largest wastewater treatment plants. Through our Healthy Environment, Healthy Communities Grant Program, we are delivering these “resources right back to the people impacted to support their solutions for their neighborhoods,” as our president, Dr. Jana Davis, said. “The awards empower community members to lead restoration, education, and stewardship activities to help remediate harm caused and promote the sustained health and vitality of their communities.” Read more about the event and the new community-led projects here: https://lnkd.in/e7nxrPxB

Improving the Chesapeake Bay watershed through environmental education, community outreach, & on-the-ground restoration.
About us
The Chesapeake Bay Trust is a nonprofit, grantmaking organization dedicated to improving the waterways and other natural resources of Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay region. Our goal is to improve our watershed by focusing on three core objectives: environmental education, community outreach, and on-the-ground restoration. On average, the Trust awards, on average, $20-30 million per year in grants to better local communities and the Bay. We reach more than 250,000 individuals annually who are making a difference for our waters and for the natural resources of our region. Our reason is simple: we believe that getting individuals involved is the key to restoring the Chesapeake Bay and our rivers and streams. The Trust is supported by the sale of the Treasure the Chesapeake license plate, donations to the Chesapeake Bay and Endangered Species Fund on the Maryland State income tax form, donations from individuals and corporations, and partnerships with private foundations and federal, state, and local agencies such as Anne Arundel County. The Trust continually earns a 4-star charity rating, the highest possible by Charity Navigator, a national charity evaluator. Ninety-two cents of every dollar goes directly to projects and educational programs in the community.

You can help support our veterans through nature! At the Chesapeake Bay Trust, we honor those who have served by connecting them with the healing power of nature. Through the Healing, Hunting, and Fishing Fund, an online donation option when renewing or registering for your fishing, hunting or boating licensure through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources online system, veterans can enjoy therapeutic outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, and green jobs training. These experiences offer a path to healing and community reintegration. Additionally, our Veterans Engagement Mini Grant Program provides up to $5,000 to organizations offering outdoor meditation, adaptive camping, and green jobs training. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Thank you to all of our guests who joined us for our final speaker series event of the spring! Covering sustainable solutions for property owners, the event brought together valuable perspectives on how to make a difference—no gardening expertise required! “We wanted to do something to start to set up literal roots in the community. One of the ways we undertook the project was trying to get someone who had an eye for understanding how the yard worked with what we wanted it to do and how we can incorporate our beliefs in terms of being stewards of the ecosystem into the yard," Shane Stryzinski shared about his own experience installing a rain garden. "So, we worked with a landscape architect. They really set the tone for putting into practice and putting onto paper what we can do, how we can stage it, how we can work towards making very practical, immediate wins and building off those in the future.” Special thanks to all our panelists – Susy Altmann, Shane Stryzinski, Virginia Tippie, Waty Yirka – and moderator, Kathy Somoza, for leading the conversation. #NoGreenThumbNeeded #GreeningYourSpace #EcoFriendlyLiving #GreenSolutions #EmpoweringPeople #RestoringNature
