So proud of my 911 folks for executing this groundbreaking move for resiliency!
This morning, the Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communications Center and Collier County Sheriff's Office successfully completed a test of their interstate 9-1-1 backup system, which ensures citizens’ access to uninterrupted emergency response in the event of a large-scale incident. During the test, 10 live 9-1-1 calls in Charleston County were instantly routed to Collier County telecommunicators who processed the calls and electronically transmitted the information back to Charleston County for dispatch of emergency resources. These calls were rerouted seamlessly with no delay or time lost. This collaboration demonstrates how regions can support each other during emergencies, ensuring timely responses to 9-1-1 calls and deployment of emergency personnel when local resources – like 9-1-1 centers – may be strained or otherwise compromised.

During last night’s Finance Committee meeting, Public Works Director Eric Adams delivered a comprehensive update on the county’s Transportation Sales Tax program, which is funded by two half-cent sales taxes passed by county voters in 2004 and 2016. In it, Adams presented a program overview and laid out noteworthy accomplishments in each of the major program areas, featured below. Among the major transportation projects currently underway are the Palmetto Commerce Interchange, which is expected to reach substantial completion on time and under budget next year, and Main Road Segment A—the largest infrastructure project in Charleston County history—which officials broke ground on in September. The Tri-County Biological Science Center is one step closer to opening its doors Last Week, Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester County leaders joined Contract Construction to celebrate the placement of the final beam on top of the forthcoming Tri-County Biological Science Center, the first regional collaboration on DNA testing in state history. This is a significant construction milestone for the project, which will reduce DNA processing times by streamlining the local forensic analysis process. Once completed, the facility will provide examination of physical evidence for law enforcement agencies, assist in the identification of bodily remains for coroners’ offices, and deliver expert testimony to the judicial system.
