About us

Central Synagogue is a thriving Reform congregation affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism. We are one of the oldest Reform congregations in New York City, and one of the largest in North America. Located in Midtown Manhattan, we serve more than 2,000 families in our congregation, as well as the larger community. More than 800 students, from birth to twelfth grade, are enrolled in our Nursery and Religious Schools. Central Synagogue stands at the heart of one of the greatest centers of Jewish life. It has always played a significant role in the national Reform movement and in the creative and complex Jewish community of New York City. Its clergy and members continue a long tradition of leadership at the local, national, and international levels of Jewish and civic organizations.

OUT NOW: Raised Outside the Jewish Faith, Now Learning Jewish End-of-Life Traditions For those raised outside of the Jewish faith, learning about Jewish traditions — including those surrounding end-of-life — is key to nourishing interfaith relationships, and also to advancing the conversion process. Rabbi Lisa Rubin joined Central Synagogue in New York City 15 years ago and established the Center for Exploring Judaism, a structured space for such journeys. The Center partners with Plaza Jewish Community Chapel to deepen end-of-life conversations for participants. Rabbi Rubin speaks with Exit Strategy Host Stephanie Garry about the focus on end-of-life topics in the program, and individual and communal impact. Listen now: https://lnkd.in/gQVDcTjA

  • On Monday, April 7, join three-time National Jewish Book award winner and beloved author Dara Horn for a pre-Passover conversation with Rabbi Angela Buchdahl in our Main Sanctuary. Much like a Passover seder, it will be a remarkable evening of questions both timeless and timely, about history, tradition, and what messages we need to hear now. Dara Horn comes to Central Synagogue in celebration of the release of her first graphic novel, “One Little Goat: A Passover Catastrophe,” titled after the English translation of the enduring Passover song “Chad Gadya.” Kveller describes “One Little Goat” as a “deeply timely lesson about Jewish history and resilience, and about just how special and magical Jewish tradition can be.” The author of five novels and the award-winning essay collection “People Love Dead Jews,” Horn has called it “the book I was born to write,” inspired by memories of huge family seders from her childhood, with Holocaust survivors on one end and young children at the other. This event is open to the public. Register today. https://lnkd.in/enGb3TVa

  • It was an honor to host Dr. Albert Bourla, the Chairman and CEO of Pfizer, in our Main Sanctuary on Wednesday evening, where he spoke about how his childhood in Greece and being the son of Holocaust survivors inspired his career in medicine and innovation. What an honor and privilege to speak with Rabbi Angela Buchdahl of the esteemed Central Synagogue, one of the oldest and largest synagogues in North America. Rabbi Buchdahl is the first woman to lead the synagogue’s congregation, and she is also the first Asian-American to be ordained as a rabbi in North America. She truly exemplifies #courage—a concept that came up a lot as we discussed being Jewish in today’s world amid rising antisemitism. According to the latest findings from the Anti-Defamation League, there were 10,000 antisemitic incidents between October 2023 and September 2024 in the US, the most incidents recorded in a 12-month period since 1979. Their recent poll found that 46% of the world’s adult population (~2.2 billion people) harbor antisemitic attitudes. This is especially upsetting when one considers that there are fewer than 245,000 Holocaust survivors living today. It is incumbent upon us all to speak out against bigotry, and to create environments that encourage love and acceptance instead of fear and hatred. Though Rabbi Buchdahl and I have vastly different professions, what unites us is a shared commitment to using our platforms to encourage kindness, courage and integrity—values that are central to the Jewish faith and more important than ever. • Born to Holocaust survivors and raised in the tightknit Sephardic community of Thessaloniki, Greece, Dr. Albert Bourla is wired to persevere. After working at Pfizer for nearly three decades, Dr. Bourla was appointed the CEO of Pfizer in 2019. Only a year later, he faced the biggest challenge of his career: leading the development of a COVID-19 vaccine in record speed.   Dr. Bourla has also been an outspoken voice against antisemitism, using his platform to sound the alarm about rising hatred globally. And since the tragic events of October 7th, he has been a consistent advocate on behalf of the hostages, pressuring leaders across the world to do everything possible to fight for their release.   Join us in person in our Main Sanctuary on Wednesday, February 5th at 6:00 pm to hear from one of the most influential Jewish leaders of our time in conversation with Rabbi Angela Buchdahl. The event is open to the public at no cost. https://lnkd.in/gKUuit5i
