CT's nonprofit art museum bus bridging inequities in education & arts access

About us

cARTie is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization bridging inequities in education and arts access across Connecticut, and bringing the museum field trip to schools and students directly. It reimagines the museum concept, deconstructs traditional models, and is committed to making sure Connecticut's diverse children feel represented and empowered. To this end, cARTie offers inclusive internship and exhibition opportunities to a diverse population of high school art students and provides critical museum-based learning opportunities that enrich and deepen early education and SEL, while meeting ELDS, NCCAS, and CCSS, to PreK-2 students who otherwise may not have access to robust arts programming.

🚨 Last night, the Administration issued a new Executive Order aimed at gutting the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Eliminating the only federal agency dedicated to supporting museums directly undermines the will of the people and the critical roles museums play in American society. We’re coordinating with our partners and champions on Capitol Hill, and you can expect an update from us in the coming days. 📢 What can you do right now? Prepare ahead of Monday. We will provide you with the tools to tell your story, but no one can tell it better than you can. Your elected officials need to know how your museums and communities have been supported through IMLS funding and what’s at stake: education, jobs, conservation, and vital programs for your community. The future of the museum field depends on all of us. Updates: https://lnkd.in/gkYqBUm3 Full Executive Order: https://lnkd.in/gfJeHXjA

  • Wow, just wow ⭐️ “In these moments, I found myself in awe - not as the teacher, but as the learner. cARTie’s lessons are truly transformative, reinforcing how the visual arts serve as a powerful tool for students to express emotional intelligence, honor diverse perspectives, and share their unique voices.” ~ Terese Maguire, Milford Early Childhood Supervisor Special shoutout to Carly Onorato McGannon! [Image Descriptions: Orange text recounts a recent testimonial from Terese Maguire, Milford Early Childhood Supervisor, over a yellow background: “When Carly introduced our preschoolers to the idea of becoming ‘emotion scientists,’ she engaged them in a rich discussion about the painting The Boy Who Loves Green. It was incredible to hear their thoughtful insights unfold. One student observed, ‘he is calm because green is the color of calm and peaceful, like our Little Spot.’ Another noted, ‘his eyes are bright, so that means he is joyful.’ The most transformative moment for me as an educator came when the students, working in pairs, boarded the cARTie bus to continue their emotion scientist investigations. As they examined the artwork, two young girls discussed a painting of a woman. One said, ‘her eyes aren’t just blue like some people’s—they’re a darker blue. She looks very sad.’ Her partner responded, ‘I noticed her nose is scrunched up. I do that when I’m worried. I think she’s worried about something.’ Another student eagerly called me over to share his discovery. ‘Do you see the cardinal in the corner?’ he asked. When I admitted I hadn’t noticed it, he explained, ‘we were talking about how this is a peaceful painting because it’s in the forest. Even though the bird is red, that doesn’t mean it’s angry—there are different kinds of red, and some reds are happy.’ In these moments, I found myself in awe—not as the teacher, but as the learner. cARTie’s lessons are truly transformative, reinforcing how the visual arts serve as a powerful tool for students to express emotional intelligence, honor diverse perspectives, and share their unique voices.”] #cARTieMatters #cARTieInspired #artmuseumbus #artmuseum #museumbus #preschool #reggioemilia #childrensrights #children #criticalthinking #artfulthinking

Meet cARTie’s expanded leadership team! Here’s how these leaders matter: ⭐️ Kathleen Waugh, our Director, will be building up cARTie’s presence and making sure we’re woven into the fabric of the arts and education here in CT. ⭐️ Janai Kemp, our Community Partnership Director, will be deepening our community collaborations and mobilizing our Student Advisory Board (cSAB). ⭐️ Carly Onorato McGannon, our School Partnership Director, will be nurturing our school partnerships, rallying our Teacher Advisory Board (cTAB), and organizing our education team. ⭐️ Clare Murray, our Co-Founder and Executive Director, will continue shaping our quality programming, growing our organization, and taking care of our cARTie community. ⭐️ Elizabeth Murray, our Co-Founder and Board Chairperson, will continue holding cARTie accountable for meeting our objectives and bottom line, while also volunteering on the ground and driving the bus around. As we continue growing in the direction of our mission and vision bridging inequities in education and arts access across CT, these leaders will help us advance our strategic priorities of accessibility, sustainability, and expansion (and so much more!). We can’t wait for us all to meet and mingle (and make meaningful differences in the lives of young children, emerging student-artists, and entire communities)! • Our team of Early Childhood Art Museum Educators is steadily growing and helping us keep up with demand for more school and community visits. Here you see two of our newest educators, Lori and Josie, trying out some different tools and materials aboard the bus during their intensive training this week, in preparation for their days ahead helping introduce young students to the world of museums and the myriad benefits of art and museum -based learning. Have no doubt, there was a lot of theory and research discussed as well 🤓 [Image Description: A photograph of two educators peeking through lenses in playful poses is centered with a yellow background.] #cARTieInspired #cARTieMatters #museumeducation

  • For all of you #EmotionScientists out there, we’d love to invite you to study some recent student feedback with us 📊 Since the start of this school year, we’ve been asking the students we serve how they feel about coming aboard. Here are some closeups from our analysis thus far, following the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence’s RULER Approach and coaching we’ve received from Zorana Ivcevic Pringle. We can’t wait to scaffold upon our visits and get back to our school partners soon for more art museum enrichment this year!
