Spring is here, and with it comes warm weather, along with the start of the Certified Farmers' Markets (CFM) season. CFMs are incredible vehicles connecting farmers and consumers directly. It gives us the chance to learn from the women and men who grow our food, and in doing so, allows us to better understand their farming practices. The California Department of Food and Agriculture maintains a robust database of all the CFMs across the state. Happy National Raisin Day! On approximately 100,000 acres, over 1,500 California Raisin growers produce 100% of the U.S. raisins in an area within a 60-mile radius of Fresno. Two-thirds of the U.S. raisin production is consumed in the U.S. and Canada, while one-third is exported to nearly 50 countries, with Asia and Europe being the top two export markets. The CFT family, including Board Vice Chair Theresa Kiehn, Easement Holder Randy Fiorini, and the entire staff joined in celebrating Stanislaus County farmworkers yesterday at the 5th Annual Farmworker Appreciation Awards. This incredible recognition honors the men and women who work tirelessly to bring the safest and most nutritious food and fiber to our communities. The awards are a collaborative undertaking between Modesto Rotary, AgSafe, Stanislaus County Farm Bureau, and Central Valley Opportunity Center, Inc.. And the awards were kicked off with heartfelt appreciation from California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross. Just a great day all around!!
