Why is #automation so hard to scale in US manufacturing? The Financial Times nailed it today: despite the urgent need for automation, several hurdles make adoption difficult: ✅ Shortage of skilled labor ✅ Few domestic automation providers ✅ Long installation lead times ✅ High upfront costs These challenges are real. But here’s the bottom line: In high-cost labor markets like the US, automation is essential for global competitiveness. So what can we do? 1️⃣ 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 like Brightpick Subsidies, tax credits, and national initiatives – just like what China and South Korea are already doing. 2️⃣ 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 Remove duties on components used to build automation systems locally (or gradually increase tariffs over many years to encourage a build-up of domestic supply chains). 3️⃣ 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 With record-low unemployment, protecting jobs shouldn't mean blocking innovation. 4️⃣ 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐑&𝐃 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 Innovation often starts in academia – let’s empower it. 5️⃣ 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Tax breaks or subsidized tuition for engineering students to build a future-ready workforce.
