Leaders emerging from everywhere, empowered to excel anywhere. Join us as we put education to work for college students.

About us

Braven empowers promising young people on their path to college graduation and strong first jobs. We believe that our next generation of leaders will emerge from everywhere, so we take a particular interest in ensuring our talent network is filled with people from underrepresented backgrounds. To do so, Braven partners with educational institutions, volunteer professionals, and employers to offer a rigorous and relevant career readiness course, that is followed by robust campus-based alumni programming. The course is targeted as a part of the sophomore or transfer junior experience. Through The Braven Accelerator, a hybrid online and in-person course, Braven Fellows will get: --Skills: learn the hard and soft skills companies and organizations want and practice them in mock professional settings. --Experience: apply skills to solve real-world challenges with a cohort of peers. --Coaching: receive small group and one-on-one coaching from a local young professional to achieve personal and professional goals. --Networking: expand one’s circle of champions to include motivated peers, supportive adults, and respected thought-leaders. The Braven Accelerator is principally facilitated by volunteer Leadership Coaches who come from all walks of life and all believe that our nation is better off when a person’s starting point does not limit their opportunities. Leadership Coaches guide our nation’s future leaders through this meaningful experience. At the same time, they develop and practice leadership and management skills that accelerate their own careers. They also develop their own network and deepen their connection to the community in which they live and/or work. This unique, high-impact volunteer opportunity employs a primarily virtual coaching model. From The Braven Accelerator will come a generation of leaders as diverse as our future demands.

When Kimberly Anderson, Ed.D. first joined Braven's Professional Mentor (PM) Program, she wasn’t just looking to mentor a college student — she was eager to learn and grow alongside someone whose future she could help shape. She was paired with Jelani Francis (Braven Spelman College 2022 Fellow), who had a profound impact on her and her own professional development. "Participating in the PM Program has been incredibly rewarding," Kimberly reflected. "My mentee has shown herself to be a phenomenal young woman who is considerate, reflective, goal-oriented, punctual, and prepared. Despite her busy school schedule, she consistently makes progress toward her career goals, drawing from her past Braven experiences." And, Kimberly was impressed by Jelani’s commitment to self-growth: "She is a self-advocate, actively seeking new experiences, whether that’s building her network, presenting at a Data Mining Conference in Canada, or conducting research on criminal injustice as a Lowery Institute Scholar." During the PM program, Professional Mentors and their mentees meet weekly for one-hour sessions to discuss career advice, resume building, and securing strong internships and job opportunities. It’s also a space to connect on a deeper level, learning more about each other’s journeys and inspiring one another. "Jelani made me reflect on my own goals and think about how I could improve my mentoring skills," she said. "It became clear that this wasn’t just a one-way relationship—it was one of mutual growth. On the other side of this pair, Jelani found herself thriving in an environment that gave her personalized guidance and unwavering support. For Jelani, the PM Program was a complete growth experience. "I joined the PM Program to develop my leadership skills, learn more about the tech industry, and connect with professionals who could help me achieve my goals, and the program exceeded my expectations in every way," she shared. “It was much more personalized compared to the Accelerator, and Ms. Kimberly was deeply invested in my growth." Ready to get involved and make an impact? The priority deadline to volunteer as a Professional Mentor is April 20! What if there was an educational nonprofit designed to empower first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds and equip them with skills, networks, experience and confidence to secure meaningful first jobs? And what if the organization had the operational expertise and track record to scale? Would you support them? Welcome to Braven, one of our remarkable partners. Here’s the background: As a former 6th grade teacher and executive with Teach For America, founder and CEO Aimée Eubanks Davis launched Braven as a pilot program with 17 students at San José State University – in just over a decade, Braven has served 12,000+ Fellows at eight schools across six regions nationally. But beyond providing life-altering courses for college students and delivering support that lasts through graduation, one of the key differentiators is the career-accelerating experience that prepares promising young people—many of whom are the first in their families to attend college—to secure meaningful professional post-graduation opportunities. As we enter the new year, we’re thrilled to extend our partnership with Braven and support their work in opening up access to the American Dream, empowering a generation of leaders who mirror the demographics of our country. As #WomensHistoryMonth comes to a close, Braven is proud to highlight women across its programming, like Dr. Uzoma F. Obidike, PhD, who is working to create better economic outcomes for college students. Dr. Obidike currently serves as Director and Assistant Professor of Undergraduate Career Development at National Louis University (NLU). As professor of record for the Braven course at NLU, she serves in a critical role in providing Fellows with the skills, confidence, experiences, and networks necessary to transition from college to strong first jobs. Dr. Obidike said her focus on career development came after she was unexpectedly laid off  early on in her career, when she was working in student activities within higher education.  “My experiences mentoring both college students and peers, along with my role as a team manager, revealed my ability to help people evolve into their best selves,” Dr. Obidike said. “The combination of job loss and repeated affirmations of my gift from others propelled my pivot to a career in career development and the launch of my coaching practice.” As she continues to support students along their journey at NLU, she offers advice as the next generation enters the workforce:  “There is immense power in your network, not just for job searching but for gaining access to information and valuable resources that will help you get ahead in your career and life, Start now to get into the habit of meeting new people and keeping in touch with your existing relationships.” #BeBraven #NLU

This #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re excited to recognize incredible women within the Braven community. Melanie Griegoliet, MLD serves as Coordinator of Professional Development and Training at Northern Illinois University, where she also acts as professor of record for the Braven course. As a first-generation college graduate, Melanie personally experienced some of the very same challenges and roadblocks along her journey that Braven Fellows face today. “I often felt adrift, receiving limited guidance beyond 'get good grades.' The stark realization of discovering our career center late in my junior year, coupled with the struggle to secure internships, highlighted the lack of early, accessible support,” Melanie said. “Student employment opportunities and the mentorship of dedicated student and academic affairs leaders provided a crucial lifeline, helping me envision a clearer path within higher education.” Melanie shared that her experiences inspire her to create pathways and support systems that help all students confidently navigate their professional development and achieve their full potential. “I want to ensure no student experiences the same sense of being lost or unprepared..” Melanie said. “My goal is to be the person I needed then, for the students I serve now.” #BeBraven #NIU
