  • Kirkland & Ellis is Big Law’s top M&A adviser so far this year as dealmakers face a tougher than expected transactions market. The firm guided global deals worth about $138 billion over the first quarter, according to Bloomberg Law’s league tables. Kirkland, which topped the annual chart last year, was followed by Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP ($92 billion), Debevoise & Plimpton ($79 billion), Freshfields ($76 billion), and Latham & Watkins ($68 billion). Kirkland lawyers advised on two of the quarter’s largest deals: Sycamore Partners’ $23.7 billion purchase of drugstore chain Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., taking the company private, and Constellation Energy Corp.'s plan to buy Calpine Corp. for $16.4 billion. “Although traditional M&A and private equity might be a little slower than usual, we make up for it in areas like energy and infrastructure and in the fund space,” said Michael Weisser, a member of Kirkland’s executive committee and a partner in its M&A and private equity practice group Subscribers can read more here from Mahira Dayal, Atthar Mirza, and Princess Onyiri: https://lnkd.in/eEcDArVC

Director of Workflow Solutions - Bloomberg Law

What does the future lawyer look like? With advances in Artificial General Intelligence, there’s a growing belief that AGI will outperform humans across nearly every domain. But for the legal profession, the real question isn’t if lawyers will be replaced — it’s what role we’ll play in shaping what comes next. In a new piece for the ABA Center for Innovation, I argue that lawyers will not be obsolete. Far from it. Our role will be more essential — and more demanding — than ever. AI will change how we work. But it will also call on us to guide, regulate, and ethically anchor these tools in society. History shows us: tools evolve, workflows shift, but the need for principled human judgment endures. Grateful to the ABA and Joseph Gartner for the opportunity to explore this moment. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eeXS7JZJ

  • The latest Inside Big Law is here:   Some of the most prominent, powerful law firms face government investigations into their DEI programs after President Trump ratcheted up his war on the legal industry.   A day after the investigation order, DLA Piper said it “will evolve” from its DEI programs.   Paul Weiss was fired by a Cognizant executive facing DOJ bribery charges, saying the firm’s inclusion in another Trump order could “prejudice” his case.
