bioRxiv & medRxiv

Preprints are not peer-reviewed before posting on bioRxiv or medRxiv, but by virtue of being publicly available, they are open to the community to give feedback. bioRxiv and medRxiv aggregate reviews from third parties into a dedicated feed (link). These reviews come from two separate sources: TRiP reviews (Transparent Review in Preprints), which are posted with author consent through partnering journals or review initiatives; and Discussion Sites, which are community initiatives that independently choose preprints for review. To promote the rapid dissemination of new research, bioRxiv and medRxiv depend on Affiliates who help screen manuscripts. Affiliates are active scientists who volunteer their time to quickly determine whether submitted articles include biological research and do not have the potential to cause harm to the public.  Yunlu Zhu has been a bioRxiv Affiliate since 2024. Yunlu is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Neuroscience Institute of the NYU Grossman School of Medicine (USA). He studies the neural circuits underlying balance control in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. He decided to become an Affiliate so that he could give back to the community, after having benefited from posting his own research on bioRxiv. The rapid sharing of science by posting preprints on bioRxiv and medRxiv allows authors to incorporate this feedback and improve their manuscript. You’ll be able to see other community reviews by clicking on the “Community Reviews” link of the new “Reviews and Context” widget on the right-hand side column of the preprint page (or at the bottom of the page, on mobile view). Once you click on the link or icon, the review will appear on the dashboard that opens on the right.  Preprint reviews are a great way for early career researchers to get involved in peer review, gain experience and network with fellow researchers. If the authors have uploaded those files, the “Data/Code” link will be available on the right-hand side of the preprint page. If the link is not there, we encourage readers to post a public comment on the preprint requesting that the authors submit a revision that includes those files. Michael is a Senior Scientist and Chair of the Computational Biology Medicine Program (Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network, Canada), and an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Biophysics at University of Toronto. Michael’s research focuses on machine learning techniques to gain new insights into chromatin biology. Michael encourages everyone to join in and support a better way of scientific dissemination, as there is a lot of research that needs to be made available. We are excited to announce that the nonprofit preprint servers bioRxiv and medRxiv are now managed by their own independent nonprofit organization: openRxiv. Transitioning from our original Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory affiliation to an independent nonprofit focuses governance solely on running the servers and promoting their principal aim of rapid scientific sharing. Its expanded capacity enables greater flexibility and innovation, allowing the platform to adopt new technologies or formats at the pace modern science demands. openRxiv also ensures community responsiveness by placing governance in the hands of a broad and dedicated board of scientists and stakeholders. The policies of the preprint servers will remain unchanged and our mission continues to be a free service to authors ensuring the rapid distribution of scientific information before peer review. The bioRxiv and medRxiv websites are undergoing scheduled technology upgrades by our global hosting service late evening March 7th to March 8th. Authors can still submit during this period and submission processing won’t be affected. However, papers won’t be visible online during the maintenance period. bioRxiv and medRxiv want everyone to be able to easily share the preprints they discover and read. We support this by having an easy way of posting to a number of social media platforms. After clicking on the “Share” link on the top right of the preprint page, users can select the social media platform of their choice and automatically start a post that includes a link to the preprint. It’s that easy!

James Fraser has been a bioRxiv Affiliate since 2016. James is a Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. His research is focused on the macromolecular structure and dynamics of proteins. James enjoys being an Affiliate as it brings him joy to see how happy people are once they have shared their research as a preprint, and on a time scale they control! He helps to spread that joy by committing to screening every preprint in his subject area whenever he himself submits a preprint to bioRxiv.
