About us

The Best Bees Company installs and maintains honeybee hives on commercial and residential properties in urban centers across the US. These hives serve as data points in our national network of data-yielding beehives — they're the foundation of our scientific research. Our mission is to promote and protect pollinator health and biodiversity. Since 2010, we’ve made a tangible, positive impact on the environment, one beehive at a time. We promote a culture of inclusivity and environmental stewardship, and we are proud to be a Certified LGBT Business Enterprise®. Our Story: From a humble start crafting beehives for friends and family to a nationwide, data-driven endeavor, The Best Bees Company has grown not only in size but in commitment to pollinator health. The Best Bees Company has developed innovative approaches and data that are now used by such institutions as NASA, MIT, Harvard, and National Geographic. Our Approach: Our beekeeping methodology controls for variability, ensuring the data we collect on each beehive is suitable for rigorous research. Our clientele includes corporations that want to activate sustainability in their business model, individuals who want to reinvigorate their local ecosystem from their own backyard, and property owners who want a turnkey way to put underutilized space to work for the greater good. • Did you know climate change is making it harder for bees to find a home? As cities grow and temperatures rise, wild habitats shrink — and with them, the tiny, invisible spaces that native bees depend on to survive. Unlike honey bees, most native bees don’t live in hives. They’re solitary, meaning they nest alone — in twigs, hollow stems, or small tunnels in wood. When those natural nooks disappear, so do the bees. That’s where Bee Hotels come in. Our handcrafted Bee Hotels provide safe nesting spots for native pollinators like mason bees and leafcutter bees — and each occupied tube contributes to a national research effort to understand and protect them. 🐝 Bee Hotels are now available in all Best Bees service areas. 🌼 Mason Bee cocoons are available in: Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Habitat loss is real. Let's give native bees a home: https://lnkd.in/gGAwqKAg

  • 62% of America's commercial beehives died last year, and this crisis extends far beyond honey. Best Bees’ Noah Wilson-Rich joined GBH's All Things Considered with Arun Rath to discuss the unprecedented honey bee losses and their ripple effects through our food system, economy, and environment. Read Noah's full perspective on what's driving this massive die-off and the solutions that give us reason for hope: https://lnkd.in/guaQrtg9

Dr. Wilson-Rich, AG11, is the founder, CEO, and chief scientific officer of The Best Bees Company and the Urban Bee Lab, a 501(c)3 nonprofit research charity. What began at Tufts during his graduate studies investigating the collapse of honeybee populations eventually grew into Best Bees, a pioneering organization dedicated to supporting pollinator health through research-informed practice and promoting urban beekeeping as a critical tool in environmental conservation. His book The Bee: A Natural History was published in 2014 by Princeton University Press. Dr. Wilson-Rich is the 2025 recipient of the Lyon & Bendheim Citizenship Award for his remarkable contributions to environmental sustainability and social impact. • Honey bee colonies are declining at record-breaking rates—and the numbers are sobering. But panic isn’t the answer. Action is. 🐝 Here’s how you can help: ✔️Plant native flowers ✔️ Leave part of your yard wild ✔️ Support ethical beekeeping ✔️ Reduce pesticide use ✔️ Advocate for native bee populations, too ✔️ Support sustainable farming practices At Best Bees, we’re working to protect pollinators and the ecosystems they support through research, data collection, and sustainable beekeeping. Now is the time to invest in solutions that protect our food system and environment from the ground up.

  • Think your office mastered collaboration? 👀 These bees at our Seattle corporate site just formed a living chain of workers to build something extraordinary together! This behavior, called "festooning," is nature's ultimate teamwork display. Bees link their bodies to create precise living scaffolding, maintaining exact spacing between honeycombs as others build new structures. Corporate clients like this in Seattle witness this remarkable engineering feat happening right on their properties—a powerful reminder that the most impressive workplace collaboration has been perfected over millions of years. Next time you visit your company's hives, watch for these living chains. They’re a masterclass in what true cooperation looks like!

  • We’re always honored to be invited into rooms where real change is taking shape. 🌿 Thank you to Cityscapes for hosting us at last week's BOMA Boston Sustainability Round Table! Our CEO, Noah Wilson-Rich, spoke on how urban beekeeping delivers measurable biodiversity gains and ESG-aligned impact — turning rooftops into research sites and nature-based solutions into business strategy. The energy in the room was a testament to how seriously the commercial real estate industry is taking its role in climate resilience. From rooftop hives to biophilic design, we're proud to work alongside leaders committed to building a more biodiverse urban future. 🐝

  • Earth Month is here - but forget the usual green platitudes. Pollinators are telling a different story! 🐝 After tracking pollinators across varying landscapes for years, we've uncovered critical insights that reveal why your backyard or corporate property packs more environmental punch than you've been led to believe. These aren't comfortable truths. They're honest ones, backed by what pollinators show us every day through their behaviors and population patterns. Swipe through for the six revelations that change how we think about local impact. Fair warning: you'll never look at your outdoor space the same way again. This Earth Month, let's move beyond feel-good slogans to data-driven action. The pollinators have spoken—now it's our turn to respond.

  • We're not simply talking about sustainability—we're transforming it. We're excited to unveil our latest creation to combat habitat loss: Bee Hotels for solitary bees! By hosting a Bee Hotel, you're becoming a crucial node in our vast research network. The data harvested from these bee hotel installations is the lifeblood of our understanding and protection of native pollinators. In the evolving landscape of corporate sustainability, quantifiable, high-impact data is essential. Bee Hotels offer organizations like yours the unique opportunity to enhance environmental initiatives while helping introduce native bee populations into their environment. Spring is finally here, and soon we'll welcome solitary bees to their new habitat with warmer temperatures and vibrant blooms! Are you ready to lead the charge in corporate sustainability? • Look at that Seattle sunshine! ☀️ While it might be "faux spring," the bees at Liza Apartments are soaking up every ray from their rooftop home. When Avenue5 Residential wanted to boost sustainability at Liza Apartments, they looked up—way up—to their rooftop. Now two honey bee colonies flourish there, turning unused space into a thriving ecosystem. These rooftop hives are also creating connections between residents and nature while contributing valuable data to our urban bee research. Thanks to the team at Liza Apartments and Avenue5 Residential for being such great partners in biodiversity!
