Most progress doesn’t look like a highlight reel. It looks like someone quietly doing what they said they would... again. #becauseisaidiwould

About us
Because I said I would is a social movement and nonprofit dedicated to bettering humanity through promises made and kept. To encourage positive change and acts of kindness, we send “promise cards“ to anywhere in the world at no cost. People use these cards to remember the importance of their word, for promises both big and small. It might just seem like a piece of paper, but promise cards have motivated people to stick with their commitments to better humanity. A heroin addict’s promise to stay in rehab. A young girl’s promise to stop cutting herself. Or a simple promise to volunteer at the local food bank. We have distributed over 8,420,000 promise cards to over 105 different countries! How it started… “My dad was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer on July 4th, 2011. The disease spread. On September 4th, 2012 my father passed away. Like any son, I want to remember the best of my father, but he was nothing particularly press-worthy. He wasn’t an award-winning author. He never met the President. He was no war hero. But what my dad did do was keep a promise. If he said he was going to do it, it would certainly be done. Too often we make promises, little and big, that we do not honor. It becomes easy to say “I’ll get to it” or “tomorrow.” I want to remember my Dad and the promises he kept. I want to help others remember their commitments. I handed out promise cards for the first time at his funeral.” – Alex Sheen, Founder As a nonprofit organization, because I said I would executes charitable projects that inspire others to make promises that better humanity. We have helped the victims of Hurricane Sandy, sent children with cancer to Disneyland, raised awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and much more. Since we only have a small team, our projects are often in support of other nonprofits and their amazing efforts. Because I said I would™ is a 501(c)(3) federally tax exempt organization.

Gratitude doesn’t always show up on time. Sometimes it arrives years later, in a letter that says, “You mattered more than you know.” This Promise Card was written and stuck on a wall at an event we hosted. The author is unknown. #becauseisaidiwould

A promise like “I will stop hurting myself” isn’t just a sentence on a card—it’s often the first quiet scream for help, hope, or change. The number of cards we see like this would disturb you. And maybe they should. This is why we have programs focused on resiliency skills and mental health habits in schools. They’re not just making a promise… they are writing something they don't know how to say out loud. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline—free, 24/7, and confidential support for mental health emergencies. #BecauseISaidIWould #MentalHealthMatters #Youth #YouAreNotAlone #PromiseCard #HopeInAction #SchoolPrograms #Resilience #StopTheHurt

Did you see our Founder, Alex Sheen, on Good Morning America earlier this year? He shared three resiliency skills and mental health habits. Through keynote speeches at over 1,200 events, Alex has helped audiences build real-life resiliency skills—like stress management, self-control, and setting meaningful goals. 100% of Alex's speaking fees are given to the charity. This funding supports programs empowering youth, supporting grieving families, and helping inmates make a positive change. If you're looking for a speaker who inspires action and shares practical habits people can actually use, request Alex to speak here: https://lnkd.in/gJ83d72r #Resiliency #becauseisaidiwould #KeynoteSpeaker #LeadershipDevelopment Video from Good Morning America interview: https://lnkd.in/gvyU9sS9

Our Founder, Alex Sheen, has personally contributed over $8.2 million in his speaking fees to support because I said I would over the past 12 years. He could have retired many times over by now—but instead, he chooses to keep this charity moving forward since the day his father passed away. Alex currently earns a $45,000 annual salary from the charity, has no other source of income and manages this by trying to live a simple life outside of work. Through resiliency training and positive mental health habits, our nonprofit's programs help people overcome life's adversities. To every donor, supporter, and believer in this mission—thank you. Your generosity makes a real difference in people’s lives. #BecauseISaidIWould #Resiliency #MentalHealth #KeepYourPromises

Ever feel like life is a game where the rules keep changing? Hardships and tragedies in life force us to adapt to new conditions. Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats is a structured critical-thinking method that helps individuals and teams analyze problems from multiple angles. 🔵 Blue Hat – The Organizer: When emotions run high, this hat helps us step back, set objectives, and keep discussions on track. What’s the best way to approach this? ⚪ White Hat – The Facts: Strips away assumptions and focuses on what we know. In uncertainty, it reminds us to ask: What are the facts? What information is missing? 🔴 Red Hat – The Emotions: Feelings matter. This hat allows space for intuition and gut reactions. How do I truly feel about this situation? ⚫ Black Hat – The Caution: A reality check. It highlights risks, downsides, and potential pitfalls. What could go wrong, and how can I prepare? 🟡 Yellow Hat – The Optimist: Finds the silver linings and opportunities. What’s the potential upside? How can I make this work? 🟢 Green Hat – The Creative: Thinks outside the box and generates fresh solutions. Is there another way to look at this? By wearing the right hat at the right time, we build resilience and navigate adversity with a balanced perspective. A huge thank you to the Kenyon College Softball Team for visiting this week! They strengthened their own resiliency skills while ALSO logging over 50 volunteer hours to help improve @campbecauseisaidiwould. Your hard work and dedication make a real impact! Do you know of any groups that could volunteer with us in Knox County, Ohio? #ResilienceInAction #SixThinkingHats #CriticalThinking #ProblemSolvingSkills #LeadershipMindset #MentalToughness #AdaptAndOvercome #TeamworkInAction #VolunteerImpact #BecauseISaidIWould

14 strangers drive to a place they have never seen to stay with people they have never met. All they know is that they share something in common, but even that is hard to bring up in conversation. “Why are you here?” is a tough question to ask at a retreat for grieving adults. Camp because I said I would's bereavement program teaches practical resiliency skills and mental health habits at our beautiful 92-acre property in Knox County, Ohio. During one of the sessions, a mental health professional specializing in grief shares a poem, and this line seems to resonate with everyone: "Just for today, when my heart feels like breaking, I will stop and remember that grief is the price we pay for loving, and the only reason I hurt is because I had the privilege of loving so much." To everyone who has made a promise to someone they have loved and lost, please know that we are rooting for you.
