Counting Down to 60 Years of the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad: Honoring Commander Peter Barry
As we continue our countdown to the 60th anniversary of the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad (LAL) this April, we’re recognizing the visionary leaders who helped make this railroad a reality.
One of those key figures is Commander Peter Barry, a military veteran, community leader, and true rail enthusiast. A survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Peter went on to serve as the Mayor of Rochester and later as President of Monroe Savings Bank. But his legacy in the rail industry was cemented when he played a crucial role in the formation of the LAL Railroad.
In the early 1960s, as the Erie Lackawanna prepared to abandon the Avon-Livonia rail line, Peter joined a group of local business and community leaders determined to save it. He became a founding member of LAL’s executive steering committee and was named Vice President of Industrial Development. His tireless efforts to attract new customers helped secure the railroad’s future.
In honor of his contributions, steam locomotive #38 was dedicated to Peter in 1973. At the dedication ceremony, our chairman Gene Blabey described Peter as “a train nut like the rest of us, who more than any single person was responsible for there being a Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad today.”
Peter Barry had, as Gene put it, “a full head of steam, stayed on the tracks, and knew where he was going.” His vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the LAL remain an integral part of our history.
Stay tuned as we continue honoring the pioneers who built the legacy of the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad!
