Evidence generated by Atropos Health is powering medication formulary decisions and clinical quality improvement initiatives while lowering costs of care. Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare's Collin E. Lee, PharmD, Corporate Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services, recently spoke with David Raths of Healthcare Innovation about utilizing evidence generated through Atropos Health. With Atropos Health, Emory Healthcare and Dr. Lee are able to quickly access and analyze real-world data from a federated data network of over 300 million patient records, as well as local Emory Healthcare data, to run studies that generate novel evidence to support clinical decision-making. When it comes to utilizing large language models (LLMs) in healthcare, few are evaluated in scenarios that align with clinical practice. That’s where Atropos Health co-founder Nigam Shah, Chief Data Scientist at Stanford Health Care, and Stanford University Professor, and the MedHELM tool come into play. In a recent article for STAT, Dr. Shah discusses the development of the tool, designed to evaluate the performance of LLMs within a healthcare context. Modeled after the general Holistic Evaluation of Language Models (HELM) that Stanford developed to evaluate general AI uses, MedHELM evaluates LLMs on clinical tasks evaluated by practicing clinicians, categorized into five broad areas: clinical decision support, clinical note generation, patient communication and education, medical research assistance, and administration and workflow. Beginning with testing six different LLMs on 121 individual tasks, Dr. Shah and the team aim to expand the tool to incorporate additional datasets, tasks, and models. An example of real-world evidence (RWE) to support evidence-based care is in a recent publication from Atropos Health authors. International researchers produced the first study to examine stimulant-associated cardiotoxicity in people with stimulant use disorders (StSUDs) as compared with people with nonstimulant substance use disorders (SUDs). Published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine by American Society of Addiction Medicine - ASAM, the work comes from a collaboration amongst psychiatric researchers at the Université de Montréal, McGill University, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Stanford University. Authors Nicolas Garel, Kyle Greenway, Paola Lavin, Will Pike, MD, Rebecca Hyde, Didier Jutras-Aswad, Steven Tate, and Anna Lembke found that among patients with SUDs, those with StSUD face a 37% higher risk of MACE, including a 23% higher risk of death. This new evidence provides valuable insights to guide further research and programs to address cardiovascular complications within this subpopulation, and underscores the value of novel evidence generated by Atropos Health in guiding future public health initiatives.
