About us

INVESTING IN HIGH-PERFORMING, WOMEN-LED COMPANIES Currently investing from Astia Fund I - a $32M Series A/B fund that is sector and geography agnostic. For twenty years, Astia has carved a unique path to source, screen and invest in the top performing companies. Astia’s proprietary Expert Sift™ deal sourcing and screening process is a robust, data-driven methodology that uses best-in-class tools and wisdom-of-the-crowd techniques to eliminate bias. To successfully address the intersectionality of race and gender, Astia established a clear focus on investing in women of color. Grounded in deep domain expertise, exceptional investment performance, a belief in the value of women as leaders and a proprietary investment process, Astia invests via a family of funds. Throughout its twenty years, Astia has paved the way for investors to align human values with investment rigor. Understanding the fundamentals of change, Astia has built an institution to last. Through a variety of investment vehicles, Astia enables investment at all stages of private company growth. With an acute understanding of the unique challenges of high-growth, Astia ensures portfolio success. We are entrepreneur-centric and hands-on. By investing with Astia, Limited Partners expand their legacy of impact. Founded by tech pioneer Catherine Muther in 1998, Astia has never wavered from its fundamental commitment to level the investment playing field. Still today, less than 10 percent of VC investments are made into companies that include even one woman leader. We believe in investment as a force for change.

🚨 This story is a stark reminder of the urgent need for better diagnostic accuracy in women’s health! 🚨 Rhian Butlin, a 32-year-old mother of two, underwent a full hysterectomy, appendectomy, and bowel lining removal after being misdiagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her journey began with excruciating abdominal pain that was initially dismissed as PCOS. Months later, she was told she had cancer, only to later be told she didn’t, and then did, but in her appendix. By the time the rare cancer was correctly identified, it had spread to her pelvis and lymph nodes. Rhian is now undergoing intensive chemotherapy for stage 4, incurable cancer, after losing organs she didn’t need to. Her story highlights the devastating consequences of misdiagnosis, delayed care, and medical gaslighting. We must do better for all women whose pain continues to be overlooked. https://lnkd.in/dx9je3Ri

Happy Black Maternal Health Week 2025! This year’s theme is “Healing Legacies: Strengthening Black Maternal Health Through Collective Action and Advocacy,” and it couldn’t resonate more with our mission at Mae. Mae’s work was founded on the principle that Black women deserve better - pregnancies, births, and postpartum care. We are addressing the disparities that impact our outcomes and reducing preterm births and cesarean section rates for birthing people nationwide. As a Black, female-founded organization, our individual legacies are our “why” and lead us directly to this important work. Yet history and experience only affirm that we don’t, and can’t, do it alone. Each of our unique stories, perspectives, and contributions are integral to driving the collective mission, and collaboration is fundamental to our continued progress. Mae has created a solution where mothers are empowered, doulas have autonomy, and plan partners have an avenue to reach and support their pregnant members holistically. The result is improved maternal health outcomes (up to 80% reductions in preterm birth rates and 30% reductions in C-section rates), a broader network of Medicaid-eligible and supported doulas nationwide, and reductions in the cost of care for our plan partners' most at-risk population. This year, we want to express gratitude for our partners on this journey of action and advocacy with us, working collaboratively towards our collective goal - advancing the state of Black maternal health in this country. There is no doubt that we are stronger together.  Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Inc. (BMMA) dedicates April 11-17 to raise awareness for the Black maternal mortality crisis in America and to celebrate all of the incredible members of the birthworker community who work tirelessly to protect and uplift mamas everywhere. AI made a Puma ad. So I made one too. Puma recently released a spot created entirely by AI agents. Every frame, every character, every sneaker generated with virtually no human touch. It’s an impressive experiment. But when I heard the AI voiceover describe Puma as being for “unapologetically authentic” people, something didn’t sit right. So I ran my own experiment. I took the same soundtrack from the AI spot and curated content from real humans: 📹 Clips from the Catch+Release Creator Community 📹 Footage from past Puma commercials 📹 Found content from across the internet, pulled into Catch+Release to generate comps Then I brought it all into CapCut and made a rough cut. No production budget. No crew. Just curation, taste, and a bit of hustle. It took me about 10 hours. Judge for yourself. But I think it proves that real, human content just feels better. If you want something truly authentic—the kind that feels alive—you don’t need to replace humans. You need to find them. License them. Elevate them. And Catch+Release makes that almost as easy as prompting an AI. #HumanContent #FoundContent #UGCLicensing

Mae is proud to partner with one of the largest MCOs, serving both rural and urban populations of members and doulas in the Midwest. Within this partnership, upwards of 70% of our members are actively working with their doulas: proactively engaged in their care, enthusiastic about receiving childbirth education, and valuing the one-on-one physical and emotional support that doulas provide. Mae has demonstrated an 82% reduction in the preterm birth rates and >20% reductions in cesarean section rates among these doula-engaged members, with over 50% of our members having their doula at L&D. In fact, 70% of members that enroll in their last trimester (less than 2 months from their due date) are successfully matched with and able to have a doula present at their birth. These outcomes are the direct result of the layers of support Mae provides - care coordination, group-based virtual education, and 1:1 in-person doula support during the prenatal, birth, and postpartum period - all driving improved outcomes for members while also increasing sustainability and reducing the administrative burden for the doula workforce. The “doula effect” is real, and Mae provides a pathway for doulas to serve their communities in a sustainable way and on a larger scale – advancing advocacy and deserved equity in outcomes.   For more information about Mae, visit MeetMae.com and follow us on Instagram (@maehealthinc). SVB Innovation in Women’s Health 2025 report shows record investment in core women’s health ($2.6B), but the real story is deeper: women’s health is evolving into a well-funded, multidimensional ecosystem tackling some of medicine’s most critical unmet needs. AOA Dx is proud to be featured in the report's 2024 Notable Deals and Women’s Health Market Map for our work in ovarian cancer—an area where innovation has long lagged, despite its devastating impact. We’re building the first early detection platform designed specifically for this space, bringing modern science to a historically overlooked disease. As investors and healthcare leaders realize that vast landscape of opportunity in women's health, companies like AOA are leading a new wave of targeted, scalable solutions. https://lnkd.in/g98Avcmq

Head of Growth at Mae, a Maternal Health Digital Solution

We built Mae for Medicaid. Our product, our processes, and our vast doula network were created to optimize for success in the most regulated of most regulated spaces. After growing into 10 states across all of the largest MCOs (Aetna, a CVS Health Company, Centene Corporation, HCSC BCBS, Molina Healthcare, UnitedHealthcare and more!), and seeing the impact and outcomes we've had (up to 82% reductions in preterm births, 30% reductions in c-section rates and a whopping 80% doula utilization), we knew there was more to do.   We are now thrilled to be live with our newest line of business - Individual and Family Plans and State Marketplace plans - with our entry into Covered California and supporting Essential Plan members in New York with our health plan partners.  We’re eager to replicate the impacts we’ve delivered in the Medicaid space, and to bring Mae’s critical services to thousands more expectant and new mothers. #managedcare #digitalhealth #patientcare #maternalhealth #mae

We are so excited to have our work featured on CBS Health Watch! Thank you Kelly Werthmann for taking the time to learn more about our work with Dr. Kian Behbahkt, Benjamin Bitler and their team at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Their work as part of the Ovarian Cancer Innovations Group at CU and their collaboration with AOA has been pivotal to the advancement of our early detection ovarian cancer test. "AOA's early detection tool is like finding smoke before the fire. Not only can they see the smoke, they can actually pick out components of that smoke well before anything that looks like smoke is seen. This is exciting because it will translate into lives saved and women don't die from this horrible disease." - Dr. Behbahkt "We were able to profile these 500 patient samples (from the University of Colorado) to understand biomarker profiles and see what specific biomarkers are present in early stage disease, and how to be to able to differentiate that from those women who are healthy or those women who have benign conditions," - Anna Milik Jeter Check out the full article and segment here: https://lnkd.in/dwVWZ_mU #ovariancancer #womenshealth #cancer #earlydetection #biotech
