Freight rail combines innovation and the power of human ingenuity to support jobs, advance safety and fuel economic grow

About us

America's freight railroads operate the safest, most efficient, cost-effective and environmentally sound freight transportation system in the world — and at the Association of American Railroads (AAR) we are committed to keeping it that way. Operating over a private, 140,000 mile network stretching across the far reaches of North America, AAR members include the major freight railroads in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as Amtrak. Working with elected officials and leaders in Washington, D.C. on critical transportation and related issues, AAR ensures that the freight rail industry will continue to meet America’s transportation needs today and tomorrow. As the standard setting organization for North America's railroads, AAR is also focused on improving the safety and productivity of rail transportation. AAR helps advance these goals through its two subsidiaries, the Transportation Technology Center Inc.(TTCI) and the Railinc Corp. TTCI is the world's leading research, development and testing facility, and develops next-generation advancements in safety and operation efficiency. Railinc serves as the rail industry’s leading resource for rail data, information technology and information services, and uses one of the world's largest data networks to track customer shipments. AAR also supports the Railroad Research Foundation (RRF), a world-class policy research organization dedicated to sustaining a safe, secure and technologically advanced rail network.

  • A big thank-you to our friends at the Beer Institute and the National Grain and Feed Association for coming together to celebrate how our industries work as one. Together, we make it happen: 🌾 Farmers grow the grain. 🚛 Grain handlers and elevators prepare and load it. 🚂 Railroads move it across the country efficiently and reliably. 🍺 Brewers craft the final product and get it to shelves. With over 1 million grain carloads and nearly 100,000 beer carloads moved by rail last year, this partnership is more than symbolic—it’s essential. Here’s to the people, systems, and connections that keep the supply chain strong. We’re proud to be in it together.🍻

It was great partnering with the Ian Jefferies with the Association of American Railroads and Mike Seyfert with the National Grain and Feed Association for our “Beer Across the Heartland” event to celebrate #beer's symbiotic relationship with our #grain and #rail partners. Working together, our three industries harvest the ingredients, manufacture and transport America's favorite alcoholic beverage, supporting millions of good paying jobs. Fun fact: Our railroads transport more than one million rail carloads of barley, corn and wheat each year. In 2024 alone, rail moved nearly 100,000 carloads of beer on U.S. railways. Needless to say, beer, grains and railroads work hand-in-hand to contribute to our nation’s economy in every single congressional district.  We look forward to working with AAR and NGFA again in the future. 🌾🍻🚂Cheers! #harvest #brew #transport #railroads #grain #beer

  • Railroads are the backbone of the supply chain—and partnerships are what keep that backbone strong. The collaboration between BNSF Railway, Norfolk Southern and The Northwest Seaport Alliance showcases how strategic coordination can deliver faster, more reliable intermodal service from the Pacific Northwest to Chicago. By expanding network capacity, investing in infrastructure and workforce, and working hand-in-hand with supply chain partners, freight railroads ensure goods keep moving—efficiently and sustainably—across the nation.

Exciting news on our northern corridor! BNSF and connecting partners Norfolk Southern (NS) and The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) have announced the collaboration of a 3-day faster service product for inland point intermodal (IPI) traffic from the Pacific Northwest, destined to and connecting through Chicago and beyond. The redesigned train plan will encompass the NWSA building trains in less than 2 days dwell off the dock. The seamless hand-off across our Northern Transcon route enables faster transit and better consistency for cargo shippers. The total time from ship to Chicago will be 6 days, the fastest from any PNW gateway in North America. U.S. rail traffic rose sharply for the week ending March 29, with volumes up 8.6% year-over-year—driven by gains in both carloads and intermodal units. Notably, we saw strong increases in shipments of coal, grain, and motor vehicles, all of which reflect underlying strength in industrial activity, agriculture, and consumer demand. These numbers aren’t occurring in a vacuum. They mirror broader trends in the economy: ✔️ Manufacturing output is climbing, particularly in motor vehicles. ✔️ Industrial production is at record highs, with mining and energy sectors accelerating. ✔️ Consumer demand remains solid, pushing up retail sales and restocking needs. ✔️ Grain exports and energy shipments are also rising, feeding into higher rail volumes. With intermodal traffic up 9.4%, we’re seeing clear evidence of continued supply chain normalization and freight fluidity. Altogether, the first 13 weeks of 2025 show a 4.5% year-over-year increase in total U.S. rail traffic—an important signal of real economic activity on the ground. 📊 Read the full rail traffic report here: https://lnkd.in/ejJmEdMT

A resilient rail network is a strong rail network! When you're operating 24/7 on 32,500 route miles of track in multiple climates, the unexpected can happen -- but we proactively invest in our network so we're ready to spring into action, restore service quickly and keep the freight moving. This year we'll spend $3.8 billion on capital investments, including $2.84 billion to maintain our infrastructure. Steps we're taking to keep our network resilient for our customers include: 🚂 Track lifting, to protect against flooding 🚂 Slope armoring and stabilization, to resist erosion 🚂 Slide fences, to protect track from landslides and falling rock 🚂 Fuel cells, to provide temporary power for signal and crossing systems 🚂 Switch enhancements, to keep them operating in extreme conditions More about how we provide resilient service for our customers at https://lnkd.in/e3MZ6iKN. #resiliency #freight #rail #logistics

The latest jobs report shows a labor market that’s still growing—but losing momentum. 151K jobs added, unemployment up to 4.1%, and hours worked stuck at post-COVID lows. Companies aren’t cutting jobs in large numbers yet, but they are scaling back hours and hiring more cautiously. One sign the economy isn’t in freefall? Freight demand has been holding up, a signal that businesses are still moving goods. But if hiring slows while freight remains steady, it suggests companies are preparing for uncertainty—not yet pulling back entirely. 🚨 The real warning sign? If both freight activity and employment start declining together, that would point to deeper economic trouble ahead. For now, the labor market looks like it’s cooling, not collapsing—but the next few months will tell us whether this slowdown is temporary or the start of something bigger. 📢 Want deeper insights? Keep an eye out for our Rail Industry Overview (RIO) coming Monday, where we’ll dive into what freight trends are signaling about the broader economy. #LaborMarket #JobsReport #Economy #FreightRail
