"420' is slang for pot smoking, particularly at 4:20 p.m. or on April 20. Its origins are debated. No colon or slash is necessary unless referring specifically to the time or date.

The 10 provinces of Canada are Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador (but usually known as just Newfoundland), Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan.

There are also life peers who are appointed to the House of Lords and hold their titles only for their lifetimes.

The average is maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices’ averages committee, comprising representatives of S&P Dow Jones Indices and The Wall Street Journal. Always use the full name on first reference in stories. On subsequent references, use the Dow.

We updated our guidance on prefixes in 2024 when we switched to using Merriam-Webster as our primary dictionary. We no longer generally use a hyphen with these prefixes: out-, post-, pre-, re-. Previous guidance was to use a hyphen with those unless listed separately in the dictionary. This change aligns style on those prefixes both with our overall guidance and with Merriam-Webster.
