The nation's oldest legal & civil rights organization serving low-income API and immigrant communities.
About us
We were founded in 1972 as the nation’s first legal and civil rights organization serving low-income, immigrant, and underserved Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Within that broad political umbrella are shared histories and stories, as well as unique systemic inequities and barriers to justice and freedom for different ethnicities. We are committed to serving the vast diversity of communities of Asian descent, including Arab, Middle Eastern, and Muslim communities. Our fights for justice and equity are deeply informed by and in solidarity with fights for liberation by and for Black, Indigenous, and Latine communities. In California, with a special focus on the Bay Area, we bring together legal services, community empowerment, and policy advocacy to fight for immigrant justice, economic security, and a stronger democracy.

On March 28, 1898, Wong Kim Ark won a historic Supreme Court ruling that affirmed what the 14th Amendment promised: if you are born here, you are a citizen. 127 years on, we honor Wong Kim Ark’s victory and stand united against the Trump administration’s illegal executive order that seeks to strip U.S. citizens of this constitutional right. The Asian Law Caucus, along with ACLU, ACLU of New Hampshire, NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc., State Democracy Defenders Action, and other partners have challenged Trump’s illegal and unconstitutional assault on birthright citizenship. This lawsuit and others have stopped Trump’s order from taking effect while the legal challenges proceed. Winnie Kao, senior counsel at Asian Law Caucus, says: “Whether by stripping children of birthright citizenship, silencing people based on the languages we speak, or invoking a 1798 wartime authority to disappear our family members and neighbors, the Trump administration is hoping to sow division to claim more power and control over our lives. Wong Kim Ark’s fight for justice and the community members who fought with him are inspirations for us today: we need to join together—as people who want the best for our children and future generations—to safeguard our freedoms.” 🔵 To read our full statement visit: bit.ly/alc-wka127 🔵 Read about the history and legacy of Wong Kim Ark: bit.ly/alc-wka-legacy #ImmigrantJustice #ImmigrantRights #WongKimArk #BirthrightCitizenship #ExecutiveOrders #AsianAmerican #Freedom

NEW: To protect and strengthen Californians’ freedom to have an equal say in the decisions that shape our lives, we’re launching a new bill, #SB266. Our state is stronger when all voters, no matter what language we speak, can cast our ballots fairly and equally. With the bill, California counties would be required to provide voters with: 🟣 Votable ballots in Spanish in 28 additional counties (56 counties total) 🟣 Votable ballots in Tagalog in 23 additional counties (29 counties total) 🟣 Votable ballots in Amharic, Armenian, Arabic, Russian, Somali, and other languages that federal law has long excluded. Bill author Senator Cervantes says: “One of the reasons we are proud to call California home is that our state is one of the most diverse in the country. We must continue to embrace and elevate our diversity to ensure that everyone has the same opportunity to thrive.” Learn more about the new bill & how Californians are joining together for our freedom to vote: https://lnkd.in/gjzCQ3wD CALIFORNIA COMMON CAUSE, PANA #Democracy #CApolitics #Sacramento #CAstatecapitol #VotingRights #ImmigrantRights #InclusiveDemocracy #California #FreedomtoVote

“Trump’s agenda is to spread fear and chaos based on what we look like, where we come from, or what we believe, and in the past 72 hours, the administration has defied at least two federal court orders to evade due process at the expense of working people, aspiring citizens, and all of our civil rights. When government agencies deliberately ignore court orders, they undermine the very foundation of our democracy. Family members and neighbors are being torn from their homes and communities despite judges ruling to protect them. No administration should be allowed to pick and choose which laws and court orders it follows,” – Aarti Kohli, executive director of the Asian Law Caucus. On Saturday, President Trump issued an executive order invoking the Alien Enemies Act against any Venezuelan national as young as 14 who the Trump administration claims is a member of the Tren de Aragua gang. Trump’s action gives himself unchecked power to disappear people without hearings or any semblance of due process. Every sector of our society - companies, institutions of faith and education, and state and local governments at all levels - must take action and speak out for justice and safety for all.
