To build awareness of April being Child Abuse Prevention Month, you may see pinwheels all over town. Pinwheels serve as a national symbol for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. In recognition of this month and the organizations that protect children in our community, members of the Ascend team planted a pinwheel garden at the Ascend Nonprofit Center.

Today is National Employee Benefits Day, so we celebrate our HR team and all the work they do to administer benefits for our supported organizations. Ascend’s HR department ensures we offer a comprehensive, affordable benefits package to the over 600 employees in our network. Thank you Sharon, Darlene, Jamelle, Paula, Janise, Bethany and Christen for all you do to manage our benefits program!

Today is the first day of Child Abuse Prevention Month. We are proud to support Council for Children's Rights, Care Ring, Communities In Schools of Charlotte Mecklenburg, Inc, Safe Alliance, Children’s Alliance and Meck4Kids as they work daily to protect, advocate and care for children in our community. Their efforts to keep kids safe does not go unnoticed, and we gladly spotlight their work to raise awareness about child abuse prevention. To report child abuse or neglect, call the Mecklenburg County 24/7 HELP line at 980-314-3577.

NC MedAssist is the only state-wide nonprofit pharmacy in North Carolina. Our partnership with NC MedAssist began in 2010 when they moved into the Ascend Nonprofit Center and began utilizing IT Shared Services. In 2015 they decided to maintain their IT support when they relocated to a warehouse facility that better served their clients. Through various programs, they provide much-needed prescription and over-the-counter medications at no cost to people in need. Learn more about the unique ways they dispense hope to our community on their website at www.medassist.org.

Ascend’s Shared Services model offers nonprofits an affordable way to meet back-office needs. In FY24, nonprofits utilizing our Finance Shared Services saved an estimated $1.48M compared to market rates! In turn, nonprofits can direct more resources to program services and delivery – leading to greater impact on our community!

I don’t know about you, but we’re feeling 22! In the late 1990’s, development in Charlotte was booming, leaving nonprofits searching for affordable space and long-term stability. Nine nonprofit leaders came together to find a solution. They developed an idea for shared space with shared costs and a common purpose. With support from the community, they raised the funds needed to build what is now the Ascend Nonprofit Center. Twenty-two years ago, we opened our doors and the nine founding agencies moved in. Today, Ascend houses 15 nonprofit organizations and one for-profit tenant, and offers shared finance, HR and IT services!
