On April 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill authorizing the creation of the United States Air Force Academy. On July 11, 1955, the first class of 306 cadets was sworn in at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado. Seven decades later, we reflect upon and celebrate the Academy’s founding and its impact on tens of thousands of airmen and guardians and on the security of our nation. We honor those who established this institution, those who shaped its future, and those who helped forge the proud traditions of integrity, excellence and service before self.
