The latest report from Voices of Child Health in Chicago at Lurie Children's reveals gun-related violence in neighborhoods, poverty and lack of adult supervision as three of the top 10 child health concerns among Chicago adults. Respondents also expressed a heightened concern around children and adolescent social media use, as it climbed from 8th to 4th on the list. Learn more about the survey, conducted in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Public Health, and findings at the link below. "Our findings show that Chicagoans are deeply concerned about the environment in which children are growing up,” said Marie Heffernan, PhD, Director of Voices of Child Health in Communities at Lurie Children's and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “This year’s report underscores the need for continued investments in violence prevention, economic stability, and supervision solutions to support children’s safety and well-being.” https://lnkd.in/gST4MuAi

Research from Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute’s at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago strongly suggests that Kawasaki disease is caused by a single respiratory virus that is yet to be identified. Findings contradict the theory that many different pathogens or toxins could cause this disease that can lead to serious cardiac complications in young children. “The cause of Kawasaki disease has been a mystery for over 50 years,” said Anne Rowley, MD, pediatric infectious diseases expert and scientist at Manne Research Institute at Lurie Children’s, who is the lead author on the study published in Laboratory Investigation. “Our compelling data are a huge step forward and provide a clear direction for the field to identify and sequence the virus that causes Kawasaki disease in susceptible children. This will be critical to advancing the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Kawasaki disease.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gHGduauc. #kawasakidisease #infectiousdiseases #research
