We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of David Sutherland, MD, PhD—a visionary in transplantation and a leader in transplant surgery who served as ASTS President from 1990-1991. Dr. Sutherland's groundbreaking work revolutionized pancreas and islet transplantation, earning him the title of the "father" of the field. He performed the world’s first clinical islet transplant and the first living-donor partial pancreas transplant, shaping the future of diabetes treatment. His contributions also include directing the world’s largest pancreas and islet transplant program at the University of Minnesota and developing the “Sutherland technique” for spleen preservation. A prolific researcher with over 1,000 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Sutherland’s impact extends beyond his surgical innovations—he was an inspiring mentor whose trainees now lead major transplant programs across the world. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will continue to shape the field of transplantation for generations to come.
