The American Folk Art Museum presents the creative expressions of self-taught artists across time and place.
About us
Since 1961, the American Folk Art Museum has shaped the understanding of art by the self-taught through its exhibitions, publications, and educational programs. As a center of scholarship, it showcases the creativity of individuals whose singular talents have been refined through personal experience rather than formal artistic training. Its collection includes more than eight thousand works of art from four centuries and nearly every continent—from compelling portraits and dazzling quilts to powerful works by living artists in a variety of mediums.

We are deeply saddened to share news that Richard Gasperi, a longtime patron and supporter of the American Folk Art Museum, passed away last week. As the founder of Gasperi Gallery in New Orleans, Richard was one of the most respected dealers and supporters of self-taught art in the field, who worked directly with artists such as Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Howard Finster, and David Butler. AFAM is honored to be the beneficiary of Richard's unparalleled collection and archive, and was one of the first people inaugurated into the Museum's Legacy Society in 2021, which was created specifically to highlight our supporters who have made lasting commitments to the future of the Museum. We are pleased to announce that Lee Ann Dillon, a distinguished legal executive and senior partner at Reed Smith LLP, was recently elected to the American Folk Art Museum’s Board of Trustees following a unanimous vote during its most recent meeting in February. Dillon, a longtime supporter and advocate of the arts, previously served on the board of trustees at the Newark Museum of Art, the North Carolina Dance Theatre, and the Tryon Center for Visual Arts. She was involved with numerous committees and also played a pivotal role in fundraising initiatives. Her expertise with museum governance and passion for self-taught artists will be invaluable for advancing AFAM's mission. Join us in welcoming Lee Ann Dillion to the American Folk Art Museum's Board of Trustees!

To commemorate Black History Month, the Museum Shop is putting a spotlight on Black American folk artist Missionary Mary Proctor. After the tragic loss of several family members in a fire 30 years ago, Proctor was compelled by a divine message to “paint the door”—and has been painting ever since. Proctor’s paintings often bear messages of love, faith, and family and incorporate found objects such as buttons, paintbrushes, and beads. Her work has been exhibited widely and is included in numerous institutional collections, such as the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Visit our Shop to explore a selection of Proctor's original paintings currently available. Click here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/d2sRXhEg
