Two infants in Louisiana recently died of pertussis (also known as whooping cough), as cases continue to rise. According to CDC data, reported cases increased to 35,435 in 2024, up from 7,063 in 2023. Pertussis is a highly contagious infection of the lungs that can cause serious health complications in small children. Vaccination is the best way to prevent it with the DTaP vaccine given at 2 months of age with subsequent doses at 4 months and 6 months, and boosters at 15-18 months and 4-6 years. In a child health advocacy win, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously today that the FDA properly rejected applications to market fruit- and dessert-flavored e-cigarettes that are popular with teens. AAP has long advocated for policies that protect youth from the harms of e-cigarettes and vaping devices. AAP had joined other health organizations in submitting an amicus brief in this case supporting the FDA’s decision and noted the significant evidence around youth use of these flavored products and the harms associated with them.

Recent actions taken by the federal government, including yesterday’s layoffs of thousands of HHS employees, have sidelined vaccine expertise in favor of elevating anti-vaccine perspectives. In a new op-ed, AAP President Susan Kressly said that with a growing measles outbreak, “This should be an all-hands on deck moment for public health officials… [Instead], continued efforts to push an agenda that contradicts facts and creates an environment of anxiety is unwarranted, distracting and dangerous.” AAP urges government leaders to work in partnership with public health and medical experts to promote immunization. As Dr. Kressly said, “Pediatricians are eager to help. Children and their families are counting on us.” Read the op-ed: https://lnkd.in/edzG4h6H

AAP President Susan Kressly was a guest on The Rachel Maddow Show last night to talk about the growing number of measles cases and the importance of vaccination to prevent new cases and stop the spread.
Last night, I had the privilege of joining The Rachel Maddow Show to discuss the measles outbreak in Texas and the rising number of cases across the country. During the segment, I emphasized that the MMR vaccine is the best defense against measles and that vitamin A does not prevent the virus. Public health is a collective effort, and vaccination is the key to protect our communities and keep children healthy.

In a significant win for gun violence prevention advocacy, the Supreme Court upheld restrictions aimed at limiting access to “ghost guns,” which are untraceable and unserialized firearms built from kits or other matching components. AAP and other leading medical groups filed an amicus brief in this case, with AAP previously calling for the regulation of ghost guns to reduce firearm-related injuries and deaths. Suspected ghost guns recovered by authorities have steadily increased from 1,758 in 2016 to 19,344 in 2021. Learn more about the ruling from AAP News: https://lnkd.in/eTY3Ufu4

The Washington Post reported that David Geier, a noted vaccine skeptic, has been hired by the HHS Department to conduct a study on vaccines and autism. Multiple studies from around the world have already found no link, including language on CDC’s website stating that “Vaccines do not cause autism.” AAP President Susan Kressly said efforts to misrepresent decades of research poses a threat to the health of children. Dr. Kressly called on the government to promote the benefits of vaccines and urged the CDC to remain autonomous in its ability to publish research and evidence-based recommendations.
