About us
ALCOSAN is one of the Pittsburgh region’s premiere environmental and public health organizations, treating wastewater for 83 Allegheny County communities, including the City of Pittsburgh. The authority enhances the community’s quality of life and safety by working to protect drinking water, rivers and streams, and making the Pittsburgh region a great place to live, work, and play. ALCOSAN’s 59-acre treatment plant is one of the largest such facilities in the Ohio River Valley. ALCOSAN is a great place to work, therefore, turnover has historically and continues to remain very low. On average, 10 to 15 employees are hired per year mostly for entry-level plant or office positions. Hundreds of applications are received every year, and even more remain in the applicant database. ALCOSAN currently employs more than 400 people, with about 30 percent of them designated as salaried, including directors, managers, first-line supervisors and other professionals such as engineers. ALCOSAN also employs guards who are members of the General Teamsters, Chauffeurs & Helpers Local 249. The rest of ALCOSAN’s workforce are members of the Utility Workers Union of America Local 433. Most of ALCOSAN’s employees work Monday through Friday with the Operations Department and Security personnel working a rotating shift schedule. A message to our new family members: Today, you’re not just starting a job— you’re stepping into a mission. Protecting water. Keeping communities clean. Making a real impact— one flush at a time. After your plant tour today, remember that every pump, every pipe, & every test matters. The work isn’t always glamorous, but it’s essential. And now you’re part of the team that keeps it all flowing. Welcome to the ALCOSAN family, we’re glad you’re here.
