  • Congratulations to Greg Hagan, RN, of our Cardiovascular Services team. Greg is our January Service Excellence Nursing Winner! His nominator stated, “I have known and worked with Greg for many years. Not only does he take excellent care of his patients, but he does so in a manner that makes them feel comfortable with their care provided. He is always kind and respectful to everyone he encounters, whether it’s a patient, family member, or colleague – he never meets a stranger.” She went on to share two examples of when she encountered him going above and beyond for our patients. First, “While I was recently visiting the gift shop, Greg was standing in the doorway with a patient in a wheelchair. The patient seemed to have all his belongings with him and needed help. I stood there talking to Greg while the patient was getting what he needed from the gift shop. I asked Greg if this was a patient of his to which he replied that he met the patient while walking down the hallway to get lunch and asked the patient if he needed assistance. Greg proceeded to push the gentleman in a wheelchair through the cafeteria’s lunch line and then to the gift shop. Greg was patiently waiting for him to get what he needed and then helped him find his destination. This was such a selfless act for Greg, an employee, to offer during their already busy day.” Next, “Greg, in his regular clothes, was visiting someone in the Emergency Department when I saw him standing at the desk, and I stopped and spoke with him for a moment about how busy the Emergency Department was currently. A few minutes later, I turned around to see Greg in scrubs asking where I needed him. He jumped in taking patients, helping decompress the department. He didn’t even think twice about helping his fellow teammates.” We are fortunate to have Greg on our team, caring for our patients and our community. His dedication to our hospital, patients, team and our community, and his selflessness and compassion is exuded in all he does! (Pictured with Matt Merrifield, CEO.)

  • Congratulations to Nikki Redd of our Patient Financial Services team. Nikki is our January Service Excellence Non-nursing Winner! Nikki’s nomination was from a hospital volunteer and states, “Nikki is a kind and compassionate employee who truly cares about the welfare of her patients and family members.” I saw a patient arrive in the registration lobby wrapped in a hospital blanket and carrying a hospital bag. When I approached and asked if she needed assistance, the patient mentioned that she had been in the Emergency Room, was discharged, but hadn’t had anything to eat in some time and was hungry. “Nikki saw me talking with the patient and walked up to help. The patient then told us she was looking for something to eat. Nikki left and minutes later, returned with sandwiches and juice. Before leaving, the patient thanked her for the food. And Nikki’s parting words were, ‘No one is going to go hungry on my watch.’” Thank you, Nikki, for showing compassion to those you encounter. We are grateful to have you on our team. • Congratulations to Bruce Key, RN, of our Cardiovascular Services team. Bruce is our December Service Excellence Nursing Winner! His nominator stated, “Recently, Bruce visited ICU to place a PICC line on a very sick patient. While this in and of itself may not seem like an extraordinary act as it is part of his duties, it was after his regular hours.” Bruce knew how important it was for the patient and went “above and beyond his normal duties because he understood the urgent need and placed the patient at the forefront. This is not an atypical behavior of Bruce though. He always approaches requests or urgent needs with a positive attitude. It is apparent that patient safety and quality care are a top priority for Bruce, as he exhibits these qualities every day. It is such a blessing to have him as a member of our team, and I hope he knows just how much he is valued and appreciated.” Bruce always demonstrates compassion in the care he provides to our patients, and we are proud to have him on our team! • Congratulations to Sydney Marsh, of our Telemetry team. Sydney is our December Service Excellence Non-nursing Winner! Her nominator stated, “In the fall, our Telemetry Monitor Room went live with a new auto escalation software program for increased safety. She took great ownership in learning the details of the software, communicating with all the Telemetry team members and ensuring the entire Telemetry team was prepared. As with many new applications, there is a learning curve. When Sydney recognized that nurses on the units may need additional education, she visited these units and gathered staff to explain the process in detail and answer questions. She diffused any concerns staff may have had by going to them and taking the needed time to help understand the process, and she did this without being asked.” While Sydney regularly keeps an eye on our patients’ vitals, with the new launch she went a step further and helped alleviate any concerns our own team may have had with the new system further demonstrating her commitment to our team and the safety of our patients. Thank you, Sydney, for continuing to place safety at the forefront. We are grateful to have you on our team! (Pictured with Matt Merrifield, CEO.)

  • As we celebrate #DonateLifeMonth, team members gathered outside at 1:08 p.m. to raise our #DonateLife flag in honor of all organ, eye and tissue donors and donor recipients. We raised the flag exactly at 1:08 p.m. as a symbol that for every one organ donor, eight lives can be saved. You can see our flag flying high at our hospital all month long. The event included a moment of silence and a powerful story from a donor’s mother who shared how her son’s legacy provided the gift of life to three recipients. Thank you to LifeLink of Georgia for continuing to support our patients and our community throughout Aiken, the CSRA and South Carolina.
