Today, Coleman Huetz, a student at The College of New Jersey, shares his experience observing the life-saving power of photonics in action and the critical role photonics plays in #VehicleSafety. Read what Cole has to say—and check out the photos, video: https://lnkd.in/g7_x6ZB2, and dare we say, those awesome SOCKS!💡⚡️🧦 ***** Recently, I had the unique opportunity to observe an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety / Highway Loss Data Institute (IIHS) frontal crash test of a 2025 Chevrolet Colorado and tour the University of Virginia - Center For Applied Biomechanics(CAB). These experiences reinforced the important role photonics play in preventing vehicular fatalities. I witnessed the moderate overlap front test, where a vehicle traveling at 40 mph collides with an aluminum honeycomb barrier, simulating a head-on collision. Data captured from high-speed Integrated Design Tools and Phantom cameras operating at 500 fps enables engineers to precisely analyze the effects of the crash on the vehicle and the Hybrid III dummies inside. Vehicle deformation data is measured using a specialized laser arm, marking various points on the vehicle in 3D space before and after the test. By comparing these reference points, engineers quantify structural damage and evaluate occupant risks. Photonics also helps prevent accidents entirely, notably through automatic emergency braking systems. #LiDAR systems emit infrared laser pulses, measuring distances by timing reflections from surrounding objects to create precise, real-time 3D maps. Solid-state LiDAR sensors, smaller and less costly than traditional spinning sensors, are making this safety technology increasingly accessible, significantly improving crash prevention capabilities. At CAB, researchers are increasing pedestrian survival rates during subway collisions. I saw the aftermath of a test evaluating aluminum honeycomb mesh beneath rigid plastic by accelerating a crash-test dummy into it. Interestingly, this honeycomb structure closely resembles the barrier used in the IIHS test, highlighting important parallels in safety research. CAB researchers use #Vicon motion-capture technology to analyze impacts by placing reflective markers on crash-test dummies or cadavers, tracking movements and gauging injuries. Research conducted at CAB directly complements IIHS testing, significantly contributing to safer vehicle and roadway designs. These experiences reinforced the essential role photonics technologies play—not just as advanced scientific tools, but as life-saving innovations protecting us every day.
