My Advanced Energy United parter Kat Burnham and I had a terrific time at the Massachusetts Statehouse this morning where we led a briefing for House members of the Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy Committee #TUE. Special thanks to our amazing host, TUE Chair Mark Cusack. Shout outs to the members and staff who joined us including Representatives Jeff Turco, Chynah Tyler, Joan Meschino, Steve Owens, and Jeffrey Roy. The event would not have been a success with out the work of Jen Gorke and Christian Scorzoni, the best in the business. #mapoli #mahouse #advancedenergy #affordablecleanenergy

“Due to Governor JB Pritzker's leadership and the steadfast leaders in the Illinois legislature, the state is an energy transition leader. We urge Illinois’ leaders to continue tackling the complex issues around meeting the state’s ambitious goals, and to not hold back on energy storage as a big part of the solution to meet growing energy demand, keep costs low, and help shore up grid reliability.” - United’s Trish Demeter. We joined other clean energy associations to call on the Illinois Commerce Commission’s consultant to make key revisions to an upcoming report on clean energy storage procurement. Totally agree with these key points from Advanced Energy United on the need for states to engage in regional, interregional, and local transmission planning to ensure that we build the right transmission to reduce costs and maintain reliability over the long term. Implementing better transmission planning via Order No. 1920 will be vitally important, but so will be the implementation of those processes to (1) model several long-term scenarios, (2) identify needs, (3) develop solutions, (4) analyze cost savings over the life of the asset, and (5) approve cost-effective solutions. Our report on the Southeastern regional transmission planning process (https://lnkd.in/efNZMc6z) highlighted in Recommendation 2 the need for Southeastern states to actively participate both in complying with Order No. 1920 and implementing an effective regional planning process. States have been a key driver (if not, THE key drive) of proactive transmission planning across the country, yet were largely absent from the SERTP meetings we attended in 2024. We have seen how effective state commissions can be in urging improved FERC-regulated transmission planning in North Carolina as Duke Energy is currently implementing its first Multi-Value Strategic Transmission (MVST) study via its local planning process after the North Carolina Utilities Commission highlighted the need for improved transmission planning in its 2022 Carbon Plan order. Look forward to seeing the results of this study and how it can support better planning across the Southeast! Peter Heller Katie Southworth Simon Mahan Chris Carmody John Burns Daniel Tait Gary Moody
A reminder to folks that PJM's Order No. 1920 compliance proposal in greater detail later this month! States in the PJM footprint with an interest in transmission planning should be paying close attention. "Last May, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued Order No. 1920, a landmark order requiring all transmission providers to engage in multi-value long-term regional transmission planning. The order grants states significant opportunities to engage in this process." See United's blog post on how states can engage with these compliance proceedings to learn about effective advocacy strategies. https://lnkd.in/egNfprFx

“There is no reason for Wisconsin electric utilities to focus on yesterday’s less efficient technology to meet tomorrow’s challenges,” Advanced Energy United’s Emma Heins writes in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The growing electric demand the utility anticipates in its service area can be met through a portfolio that includes affordable renewables and a suite of energy efficiency and demand response programs that are ready to deploy, well tested in the market, and will cost less than the proposed gas facilities. https://lnkd.in/g2wPUsFC

Advanced energy resources are more affordable, more efficient, and quicker to build than gas plants. Yet, Wisconsin Electric Power Co. downplayed clean energy tools in its proposal for new gas plants. Advanced Energy United’s Emma Heins talked with Kari Lydersen of Canary Media Inc. about this proposal. “We understand there needs to be increased energy production to meet that load, but we want to make sure it’s the most cost-competitive suite of options, not just defaulting back to natural gas as a baseline,” Emma said. I was happy to stand on stage last week with Mayor Tim Keller and so many partners at the Electrify New Mexico conference as he signed an executive order that pushes back hard against the Trump administration’s latest climate rollbacks. While Washington props up coal and rolls back clean air and water protections, Albuquerque is doing the opposite—accelerating our transition to clean energy, committing to 100% renewable power for municipal operations by the end of this year, and centering frontline communities in climate adaptation efforts. Mayor Keller put it best: if Trump wants to govern by executive order, so will we—only ours protects people, not polluters. In a time when federal leadership is heading in the wrong direction, cities like Albuquerque are showing what it looks like to move forward anyway. #ElectrifyNewMexico #DefendABQ #ClimateLeadership #CleanEnergy https://lnkd.in/gcjdA5qY
