Meet Scott McCloskey, an undergraduate student studying software engineering at UC Irvine. Last summer, Scott was an intern at ABPDU as part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Community College Internships program, working on machine learning applications. Scott developed a machine learning model capable of predicting sugar yields from various biomass feedstocks given their composition and pretreatment methods. "Being able to pair the ABPDU's cutting-edge research and laboratory equipment with the latest machine learning models for a research project was intriguing," Scott said. "Through my ABPDU internship, I gained vast amounts of knowledge and experience in presentation skills, supercomputer usage, database organization, time management, and the process of creating a scientific paper and poster." About us
At ABPDU, our passion for bio-innovation drives us. Our goal is to expedite the commercialization of advanced, next-generation biofuels and bioproducts by providing industry-scale test beds. The Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office established the ABPDU as part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in 2009. We’ve been operational since 2012, collaborating with researchers in the bio-products industry, the national labs, and academia to optimize and scale technologies to enable the commercialization of bio-based chemicals, materials, and fuels.

#ABPDU is mentioned in a new National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB) report that outlines an action plan to advance U.S. #biotechnology. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/e9WWcW9w
While the United States is the home of modern biotechnology, our lead in research and development, innovation, and production of the most cutting-edge biotechnology breakthroughs is slipping. China is pulling ahead, and falling behind in this critical sector puts our economic, food, energy, infrastructure, and national security at risk. In our comprehensive report to Congress, the NSCEB assesses that time is running out to retain and cement our global leadership in biotechnology. We are falling behind fast, and catching back up won’t be an option. This report is not just an assessment of the state of American biotechnology, but an action plan to achieve the greatest heights of discovery and innovation in this sector. We can maintain our advantage in this critical domain, but only if we act now. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/e9WWcW9w

My teammate Derrick Rodrigues convinced me to post this on LinkedIn! I’m so happy and fortunate to work with such a great team for our Advanced Bioprocess Engineering Lab at Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU)!! We’re learning so much about bioprocessing, including how to set up 300 L bioreactors, working with ambr250s, and now prepping and running an Alfa Laval disc stack centrifuge! The UC Berkeley Master of Bioprocess Engineering has changed my life for the better and I couldn’t be more grateful to have spent the last 7 months with my cohort! 2 more months to go and boy oh boy do I hope the time goes by slow! Starting from the upper left and moving left to right: Imajansen Tapaoan, Kenzo Khoo, Derrick Rodrigues, and Rodrigo Hernandez! Also, thank you to our wonderful professor Laura Fernandez who teaches us so well and makes us laugh in the process 💕🌼! All hard working, dedicated, charismatic, and incredibly smart bioprocess engineers ✨!
