Promoting effective and responsive philanthropy in Black communities.
About us
ABFE is a membership-based philanthropic organization that advocates for responsive and transformative investments in Black communities. Partnering with foundations, nonprofits and individuals, ABFE provides its members with professional development and technical assistance resources that further the philanthropic sector’s connection and responsiveness to issues of equity, diversity and inclusion. Established in 1971 as the Association of Black Foundation Executives, the organization was credited with many of philanthropy’s early gains in diversity. It since has evolved into an influential network. In 2013, the organization shed its descriptor and adopted the simpler ABFE (ab-fee) to better reflect its broadening membership. If you remember the report 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴, you may recall two of the recommendations: 1) the city of Atlanta should adopt a Legacy Businesses program; 2) the city of Atlanta should partner with local mission-driven developers for cohesive neighborhood-scale change Well, the work Cheneé Joseph is doing at the Historic District Development Corporation is simultaneously maintaining the rich history and propelling forward equitable development within Atlanta’s beloved Sweet Auburn neighborhood. Councilmember Jason Dozier has made landmark strides in establishing the city’s first Legacy Businesses program. Not to mention, Alvin Glymph and United Way of Greater Atlanta are doubling down on data that assess equity with the city’s neighborhoods to create economic opportunity. I am overjoyed to announce that I will be moderating a rich discussion between the three aforementioned individuals at the ABFE. A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities Harambee conference next week.
