Growing rooted, prosperous life in Black Portland 🌱

About us

We nurture collaboration, autonomy and power in Black Portland, through social and financial investment. Collaboration, because working together is essential for transformative change. Autonomy, because it’s up to us to set the terms for our future. Power, because we are making change–not asking for it.

Updates

  • Earlier this year, we gathered leaders from our 11 community partners For the Future. We spent the day growing our collective capacity, exchanging tools and tactics to better serve our community. We discussed what it means to transform Portland, how we can use data as a tool of power, and how we can scale the efficacy of our mission, given the areas we struggle to make an impact today. This experience was the first of four recurring, annual workshops that will punctuate each year of our 5-year collaboration. It was also a living embodiment of how our Fund is turning ideas into action. 🌱 For more information, watch this video featuring Camille Idedevbo, our Director of Community Strategy and Evaluation. Thank you to Riley Brown for compelling video production, allowing us to share this experience virtually. 🤲🏿

  • After two foundational years helping to guide and build 1803 Fund, Tony Hopson, Sr. and Ron Herndon left the board last month. Hopson and Herndon haven’t just been pioneers in their field, they’ve lent that expertise to our Fund as we’ve grown from idea to institution. 🌱 “We are deeply grateful for the bravery of Tony and Ron as leaders and visionaries,” says 1803 Fund CEO Rukaiyah Adams. “We will hold tight to honoring their legacies as we pivot to the future.”

We’re proud to announce a decade-long investment into the education of youth in our community. “The way our communities grow and sustain is through our children,” says 1803 Fund CEO Rukaiyah Adams. “How they experience the world is the ultimate measure of our wealth.” The grant will take shape as: 🌱 An annual, recurring $2.5 million to Self Enhancement, Inc. and Albina Head Start, supporting wraparound and early childhood education. 🌱 A joint $2.5 million every year for SEI and Head Start to re-grant into other community-based organizations supporting youth in our community. After months of eager anticipation, we’re proud to announce an over $8 million investment in 11 organizations 🌱 These 11 make-up our inaugural cohort of “For the Future” community partners. For the Future is a collaboration-minded grant, where partners work alongside us and each other to strengthen Black life here in Portland. As our CEO, Rukaiyah Adams, reflects on this moment, she thinks about the genesis of the 1803 Fund vision; she wrote the Fund’s original business concept after George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis. “I remember thinking that I wanted to use the skills I had developed over 20 years as a professional to do something transformative,” she says. That commitment to transformation has now materialized as millions of dollars invested in our community.
