For me volunteers are one of the primary resources to attain success while delivering any sporting events. I always keep them motivated by handling them with care and attention. If we are making them comfortable and listening to their problems then they are the one group with high performance and deliver their responsibilities without looking for any material gains. It is important to have an open dialogue and manage the expectations from the day one. For us engaging volunteers means we are providing them the best of environment to learn and grow. At times majority of the volunteers are youngsters and they want to pursue a successful career and if we can engage them in a way, if it meets their expectations then it is a win-win situation.

Keeping WIFM (What's in it for me) in mind when working with volunteers and helping them to identify their own career path within your organization can often lead to creative ways to acknowledge their good work, efforts, passion. Getting to know them on a personal level and helping them elevate to new & challenging opportunities can be the most rewarding for the volunteer and you as a staff partner.

As a longtime employee in the nonprofit sector, I was surprised early on by how even the smallest gestures of recognition and gratitude resonate with volunteers. Many of these cost little, but can boost morale, engagement, and enthusiasm - designate a parking spot for your Volunteer of each month; -include their contributions regularly in your social media outreach; -take photos of them in action and post on bulletin boards, with their permission, of course; -include them in staff training sessions; -invite them to your events and celebrations; -collect their observations in evaluating your programs and projects; -include them in fund development activities, outreach, & public events; -provide them with distinctive, permanent name tags.
