You’re struggling to learn a new language. How can you speed up the process?

Learn like a native: start with understanding, then speaking and later read and write. Watch films with subtitles. Then, start learning by heart poems (it will embed in your brain whole phrases and colocations); learn songs by heart and sing them outloud (it will train your muscles to pronounce correctly). I learnt English this way, through songs and films. PS1: If you live in the foreign country, avoid your compatriots! PS2: Try to date people who are native in this language ;-)

It is beneficial to immerse yourself in the language as much as possible; listening to music or podcasts, watching films or TV shows, and reading books in the target language. It is also useful to practice regularly (recording yourself speaking alone) and engage with native speakers, whether in person or through virtual platforms. Online courses and apps also provide structured lessons and interactive exercises. Lastly, it helps to learn in context, which means learning phrases and vocabulary with real-life situations and topics that interest you.

Start by setting clear, achievable goals that are specific to your language learning journey. For example, aim to learn a certain number of words each week, hold a 5-minute conversation in the new language by a specific date, or complete a language learning course in three months. Tools like AI language models can help tailor a learning path that adapts to your progress and keeps you on track towards your goals. Personal Experience: I used a goal-setting app to track my progress, which really helped me stay motivated. I set small weekly goals and larger monthly goals, and the sense of achievement I got from ticking them off was incredibly rewarding.

Listening to music is really helpful and to focus on learning high frequency verbs and language chunks! Also there are numerous studies that demonstrate learning vocabulary with visuals enhance acquisition by helping the brain make connections helping it retain better!

To speed up such process, try immersing yourself in the language as much as possible. This can include practicing regularly, listening to native speakers, watching TV shows in the language, and seeking opportunities to converse with others who speak the language learning apps or taking classes can also help expedite the learning process.

As per my teaching experience as well in view of student who is learning a langauge, mistakes are critical. I encourage students to put efforts, try to make a sentence after whatever topics have been taught. Do not feel embarrassed. When you make mistakes you learn more. Do not focus on the speed of learning, instead focus on practical learning, the more practical learning, the more you will remember and memorize. Also, tips and tricks are important which enables student to learn language in interesting manner.

I would say the very best way to learn a language (quickly) is by immersion. If you can, move to a country that speaks the language you're learning. If that's not possible, surround yourself with the language as much as you can. If you're not currently working on a translation project and, thus, don't need to concentrate on something specific, put on a movie/series or podcast in the language you're learning and listen while you're doing some chores. If you have the time, sit down and actively watch and listen. Listen to songs in the language, read books. Depending on your level, there are many possibilities of how you can immerse yourself in the language without actually being in the country it is spoken. Good luck!

Something for those stuck in the dreaded intermediate-level limbo: 1) Browse a trusted frequency dictionary and make a note of words you are not sure about or feel uncomfortable with. 2) Look up those words in a good quality bilingual dictionary that contains example sentences. 3) Import those example sentences (both the sentences of your native language and sentences of the language you are learning) for that specific word into your SRS flashcard software with that word missing (i.e. a cloze test). 4) When the flashcard appears, try to supply the missing word in the sentence of the language you are learning. You'll have the sentence of your native language to help you. 5) Once you reveal that specific word, read the whole sentence aloud.

Don't rely on a single method or resource. Mix and match language learning apps, textbooks, online courses, podcasts, and videos. Interactive AI language tutors can offer personalized learning experiences and adapt to your learning style, providing exercises that focus on your weak points. Personal Experience: I combined an AI-powered language app for grammar and vocabulary, with watching movies and listening to music.

A monotonous learning method doesn’t spark interest or desire to advance quickly. A lack of interest will inevitably slow down your pace. Therefore, a dynamic approach that challenges all facets of language learning (i.e. reading, writing, listening, and speaking) is the most natural approach. Most people can’t move to the country where the language they are learning is spoken, so a dynamic approach is the best way to simulate an in-person experience.

Consistency is key when learning a language. As little as 5 minutes is enough to float the boat on days when you don’t have much time. Everyone has a different capacity for learning and different schedules. Listening to the radio or a podcast can be done while engaging in other daily activities. Learning 5 new words a day is another way to consistently increase your vocabulary and knowledge base. Imagine if you were living in the country where the language you’re learning is spoken, daily engagement is required and learning is naturally fast paced. Now you can simulate that learning environment without having to actually move to that country by maintaining your daily practice.

En mi opinion 15 min es muy poco...creo que para que se hagan avances importantes en un idioma estaria bueno entre 45 min y 1h por dia (y uno puede elegir la estrategia de aprendizaje para eso).

Além dos demais métodos já citados, gosto sempre de ressaltar a importância de se expor a situações cotidianas de comunicação. Claro, quando se fala em cotidiano pensamos logo na imersão que é viajar para um local onde se fala a sua língua alvo, porém nem sempre é possível, então de que modo seria possível praticar no meu dia a dia? Dicas: - Simular tarefas cotidianas, por exemplo: se eu estivesse no México, como poderia pedir uma pizza por telefone? - Assistir canais de TV local(é uma oportunidade maravilhosa para aprender sobre sotaque, variações regionais, expressões idiomáticas) - Ouvir música - Conversar com nativos (mesmo que não seja presencial, a internet é um mundo!) - Não ter medo de errar! (O mais importante)

Practically everyone faces difficulties practicing active skills such as listening and speaking. So it can be very beneficial to join local language exchange groups or online communities where learners meet to practice and help each other. These groups often organise language exchange events, conversation practice sessions, and study groups where you can receive feedback from both your peers and more advanced learners.

I believe getting feedback from native speakers of the language you’re learning is the best possible way to learn correct pronunciation and meanings of the words you are learning. Talking to native speakers also helps in learning terms you might not stumble upon in a dictionary but will in real life situations.

Find movies and TV shows you might like that are originally written in this language, and start with subtitles in your own language, then in the original language. It will give you a better feel of how the language flows in reality and how people speak it in daily life.

Learning XX language solely through books like "Learn XX Language in 30 Days" is impractical. Surrounding oneself with native XX language speakers is crucial. The exclusivity of the XX language in the environment accelerates the learning process. I am a testament to this. Growing up in a Telugu-speaking village and attending Telugu-medium schools, I had no exposure to Tamil. However, upon marrying a Tamilian from Madurai, I found myself immersed in a Tamil-speaking environment. Despite initially knowing no Tamil, the pervasive use of the language in daily interactions quickly facilitated my acquisition of it. Even my Tamil-speaking acquaintances were astonished by my rapid progress.

One way to ensure that you have fun is to involve other people in your language learning experience. This could be through a language exchange, by meeting other people who speak the language and share a common interest, by engaging with content creators, or by making new friends. These people will celebrate your wins with you, support you on days when you lack motivation, and help you to understand about the culture as well as the language - which is what you need if you really want to learn.

Finding language resources that you are passionate about is an effective way to make the learning process more fun and motivating. Books on topics that interest you will allow you to explore the language while enjoying stories that engage you. Films with subtitles will help you improve your listening comprehension and familiarise you with pronunciation and vocabulary. In addition, practicing with songs and reading their lyrics will allow you to learn new words and expressions in a natural way while enjoying the music you love.

Go to dive bars and look for opportunities to brawl. The combination of alcohol and violence can add intensity and context to your learning experience and promote critical survival skills in your new language. Moreover, while your linguistic skills are still at a rudimentary level, your understanding of the local body language will improve rapidly, helping you to navigate the many opportunities to be found in the underbelly of society.

É importante recordar sempre que a função primordial da linguagem é a comunicação, por isso, antes de se preocupar em adquirir todo o léxico de uma língua, ou de memorizar todas as regras gramaticais, é necessário se expor em situações comunicacionais onde existe uma troca satisfatória.

One of the few things I've found helpful is familiarising yourself with the basics, speaking as much as you can, and using words and phrases in new situations. Make mistakes; that's how you learn, and people will correct you. Have a conversation with yourself using the new words you might have learned, join clubs, and make new friends that you can practice with.

Keep practicing and conversing over and over again.... A new language is like a new seed ..so if you want it to grow and become a beautiful plant and subsequently a sturdy tree ...you will need constant watering and nurturing of your efforts.

I'd also add to listen to the language being spoken by native speakers - some youtube channels have special programs where the native language is being spoken more slowly on purpose to help beginners.
