From my personal experience, having a weekly check-point is always a good mechanism, a weekly meeting with 2 objectives 1) show updates and risks and requests for support (regular PMO stuff) 2) show progress and drafts of deliverables (value from consulting work) typically 45-75 min, have to happen each week, use basic template so filling/ updating won't be time consuming. Use it to pre-approve deliverable and convey messages that are needed ahead

I believe this is the key factor in updates, being proactive is one of the best paths to gain client’s trust and show capability of managing tasks in hand. Maintain open and casual channels and use them wisely
