Primary deciding factor to determine cloud database type is understand the existing setup and lookout for option in cloud providers and they have lots of offerings on Database according to requirement. 1 - Relational or non-relational Database 2 - Serverless options eg: DynamoDB, etc 3 - Based on database engine types, eg: SQL, Postgress, etc 4 - How well it can be integrated with other services or On-Prem

1. Choose a database from cloud which best matches to your use-case. For SQL data, you can choose Relational databases. For others like Cassandra, Mongo or Table, you can use Azure Cosmos DB which provides the same APIs for these DBs but packed with the native cloud features. 2. Decide on the cloud model. For IAAS where you set up your own Virtual Machine in the cloud and do a lift-and-shift to the cloud.For PAAS, you can select the right database for your existing one and use the CSP provided tools to perform a migration. 3. Compare between cloud providers and select one.I would personally go with Azure provided its rich set of features and investment in AI 4. Go through the official documentation and use automation to perform migration

My suggestion here is with a view of being Cloud agnostic because, there is every chance that MySQL on premise, most likely will be just another MySQL in cloud, hence it doesn't matter if that Cloud is AWS or Azure or GCP. Same is applicable for MS SQL and PSQL. So the considerations should be on the following rather than the plethora of DB offerings by vendors which has no relevance to my workloads. 1. Ease of use 2. Performance 3. TCO and recurring costs 4. Latency and Regulatory compliance 5. License portability 6. RTO and RPO in case of any disruptions 7. Historical data on downtime by the vendors 8. Customer references who runs similar DB's or from same industry Once the above criteria is met, I am happy to hop on.

It also offers Reserved Instance which offers discounts on specific instance type opted. 2 - GCP : More oriented towards Data analytics and Machine Learning, Supports bigdata solutions. 3 - Azure: Easy integration with Windows Environment. Lots of community support and huge enterprise benefits.

Crystallizing the answer will save frustration and money by finding the best resolution to the need. 2. Are you “just” migrating the DB to the cloud, or is it part of a bigger SW/App modernization and retirement of technology debts? 3. Compliance (e.g., GDPR/CCPA). 4.
