Which software provides the most efficient integration of industrial automation systems?

In my experiences, each of DCS software has portion of user-friendly feature. For example, Siemens WinCC it has wide range of features that you can use to set HMI if we do "Good Engineering". For controller configuration, I found Yokogawa "Systemview" is simpler.

When selecting software for integrating industrial automation systems, it's crucial to consider the existing hardware and the preferences of the end user. Often, sticking with a familiar brand like Allen Bradley, if they already use their equipment, can streamline operations and reduce training needs, avoiding new software and licensing costs. However, if specific hardware isn't available or lead times are too long, we opt for alternatives and use Modbus communication or an OPC server to integrate data from multiple devices. For SCADA software, I prioritize those that include a wide range of communication drivers, eliminating the need for an OPC service, and that support auto-browsing to retrieve all PLC tags, as this feature is vital.

I have come across some different types of DCS, PLC in my working career and each of them have there own on merits and demerits. Some times it depends on the industry or machinery for which we are going to integrate it with DCS or PLC. We have Asset management System in our project and the requirement is to connect all the SMART instruments need to be integrated in one AMS (which use XX PLC) the issue arise when there are multiple types of instruments in the field and each have different manufacturers, in this case many instruments are not compatible with a particular PLC used for AMS system. To full-fill the requirement either the PLC manufacture has to do R&D to add those instruments to their PLC.

When it comes to system compatibility, every project has unique requirements. Rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach, I evaluate the specific needs of each project and choose the best-fit solution. Should to provide actual updates of firmwares and device description files (GSDML, EDS ...) and most important - information about compatibility eachother.

Experion or Ignition really are the first (2) go to systems for integration. DeltaV has done it well with their EIOC but Experion serves better as a SCADA with OPC and FTE (Fault Tolerant Ethernet) connections to Rockwell chassis etc. Ignition takes a ton of up front engineering to come close to emulating DeltaV or Experions graphic capabilities but once the UDTs are configured for each PLC vendors datatypes, it is very easy to build a lot very fast.

System Compatibility is one of the important feature in software Integration as each system has there own compatibility issues. In this case most of the software’s used in one system cannot be used for another and integrating this two system is very much difficult. The software depends on the project we work or the machinery we gonna buy.

HMI development should follow the High-Performance standard as closely as possible. The energy industry for example, deviates with some color arrangement but for the most part, modern HMIs can be configured with gray scale and colors to illuminate alarms and equipment function, drawing our eye to running, not running, or in alarm.

User Experience is another important feature in Software Integration. Many DCS or PLC have good and easy user interface that many Engineer with basic knowledge can access the software and work efficiently. However there are some systems which require special training to work on their software’s.

Always best to closely follow the Purdue model, isolate and segregate each level with proper firewalls, routing paths, and port securities.

Today Security needs to be followed each and everywhere. With everything digitalising we cannot compromise with security. There are two types of security IT and OT security. OT security is used in industries. Here each 3rd party system is integrated to DCS through a firewall at level 3.we should use managed switches and firewalls to protect each system. We should also use DMZ firewall in level 2 to protect our system from unwanted cyber attack.
