In the realm of cloud economics, optimizing costs isn't just a benefit; it's a strategic imperative. Cost efficiency metrics act as your financial compass, ensuring every cloud expenditure aligns with tangible value. Beyond the allure of pay-as-you-go, delve into metrics like cost per unit of performance, where the true value of a service is measured against its output. Whether it's transactions or user interactions, understanding this metric empowers precise cost evaluation. Equally critical is cost per unit of capacity, scrutinizing the cost of services against their storage or processing capacity.

As a Cloud Computing leader, prioritizing cost efficiency is crucial. This involves tracking metrics such as total cost of ownership (TCO), cost per workload, and return on investment (ROI). In my role, I regularly reviewed AWS billing and cost management dashboards to monitor and optimize customer's cloud spending, ensuring they are getting the maximum value from their cloud investments without compromising on performance or security.

Once at work in one of the leading FMCG companies, I needed to design a cloud-based solution that would increase customer retention through remote sales channels. Cost efficiency was the top priority for the final design because business that generates revenue also reduces costs at any level whether it's sales team, marketing expenses or even IT infrastructure for the solution. The more business spends on tools like Cloud-based solutions, the less margin is earned. From my experience it is vital for any IT professional to aspire for the peak maximum available cost efficiency that will allow any company to stay competitive and acquire more market share. It is not about designing the perfect system, but the perfect for the job.

- Also how well a service can be shared across teams or different business areas to reduce the cost. - The cost metrics should be granular enough to track the usage per team, or individual to make them accountable. Most of the costs come from inefficient usage of a service.

Defining availability and resilience for a defined budget is critical. While everyone wants the highest availability and resilience, this isn't realistically possible given a predefined budget to operate within. As a result, define your RTO, RPO, MTTR etc. considering the budget. Also, leverage of techniques like chaos engineering to consciously "try to break" your systems and make use of the monitoring tools to evaluate where your systems break. Accordingly, take these back and iterate over your goals or refine your budgets.

Availablity and Reliability comes with a cost. The higher the availability the higher the cost. So it becomes so critical which applications requires High Avaiablity(HA) because not all your applications will be mission critical. Failing to prioritize appropriately might lead to unnecessary expenditure, essentially burning through financial resources. So it becomes very important to strike a right balance between HA and the cost.

Establishing redundant systems for failover and high availability. Implementing robust disaster recovery plans. Monitoring system health and responding swiftly to potential issues.

In the pursuit of resilient cloud services, metrics become the heartbeat of availability and reliability. Gauge your success through availability, quantifying operational time as a percentage—your commitment to uninterrupted service. Downtime, the antithesis, sheds light on those moments of service unavailability. The Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR) emerges as a pivotal measure, capturing the average duration to restore normalcy after a hiccup. Whether measured by the hour, day, or month, these metrics form the pulse of your cloud infrastructure's health, reflecting not just uptime percentages but your adeptness in navigating and swiftly recovering from the inevitable challenges in the cloud ecosystem.

Availability and reliability are critical metrics for cloud performance as they directly impact user experience and trust. High availability ensures consistent access to services, vital for businesses relying on cloud solutions for their operations. Reliability, indicating the system's ability to function correctly and recover from failures, is crucial for maintaining operational continuity and data integrity. When discussing performance, various crucial factors come into play. Its not only resource utilization but also the efficiency of I/O operations, the speed of network data transfers, and the overall responsiveness of the system. Resource utilization involves how effectively the available computing power, memory, and storage are employed to execute tasks. I/O operations' efficiency determines the speed of data read and write processes, impacting overall system speed. Additionally, network data transfer speed and reliability significantly influence the system's ability to communicate and exchange information efficiently.

Best thing is, Follow Well-Architected Frameworks as provided by Cloud service provider like Amazon Web Services. The core principals remaining the same, with this, you can cope up with any cloud provider or multi cloud scenarios or Hybrid Cloud scenarios. The "Maturity" of Architecture practices in your organization would also help you address the gaps and plan for better. For instance a matured Enterprise Architecture would address Business / Technology / Information parts of Architecture and give you a measurable success in the variable requirements situations and help you propagate the desired Change easily.

Balance short-term and long-term goals: Focus on immediate efficiency while keeping long-term strategic objectives in mind for sustainable growth.
