What are the key factors to consider when choosing a mobile app platform and framework?

There have been countless books, courses, and articles on this subject. What I'd recommend is have someone focus a part of their day (every day) on the problem being solved for what audience? Define, explain, measure, and constrain it. Bring this to an engineering/design team and let them solve the architecture (e.g., platforms, frameworks, integrations, etc.). There are reasons for this, and part of it is in building a culture of a product team. A good engineering team will choose the most effective [at the time] platforms and frameworks. Work the problem and keep redefining it, day in and day out. Let engineers solve the problem. For the astute, there are two sets of users: influencers, and users—they might not use the same platforms.

If you depend on your mobile app to attract and retain users, it is important to build natively to take full advantage of what each platform has to offer and to tailor the experience to each platform. Using any other non-native framework will make you dependent on another technical provider that you cannot control ie. if you use react native, even if it's an open-source framework you always depend on the teams that update and make new versions to stay compatible with new Android and iOS operative systems. What would happen if nobody maintains it anymore? How easy is it to find framework developers? My 2 cents, if you already know how much you are going to sell in the following months don't hesitate to use native technologies, in the long run, it will be easier and cheaper. If you are testing your market and there are no hardware usage restrictions like deep use of the camera, go fully into hybrid or fully cross-platform frameworks.

Now this is where the iron triangle of project management comes (time, scope, and funding). Between these rests quality. Trying to move all these levers is hard, and funding often locks a lever which makes time difficult, and scope harder. Product and project management works here and you'll need to be ahead of engineering so far that you can make changes to product development without fits and starts in engineering. Your product/engineering relationship and how your teams work will also partly dictate the platform/frameworks the engineers choose. Again, let the engineering team decide.

Do you want to have updates bi-monthly, monthly for users? How often would your app benefit from new features rolled out into "the wild"? How often do you want the media, users, and influencers to be able to write about your changes? Again take this to the engineering teams, do not solve it for them, stay on the problem!

Regarding scalability and growth, anticipating future needs may be difficult, unless there is sufficient growth in demand for existing features/functionality. This is extremely hard if your company is building a set of "me too" features of other products. Focus on the problem and goals of the app, work with engineers, and keep the lead architect exposed to your roadmap. Be careful, don't steer your engineers all over the map trying to "throw spaghetti at the wall" (though it sometimes is fun, and sometimes rewarding).
