Output Validation is another important step: Confirm that the API returns accurate and well-formatted responses.

Once you have actual consumers make sure you're monitoring any use, and potentially elicit feedback from your users on how it should evolve.

You can burn an incredible amount of time and energy over optimising your API. Bonus note: watch out for performance regression! Any change, including updating dependencies, has a chance to change your applications performance characteristics. If you can run a suite of performance tests in CI and track relevant metrics over time you may save yourself a nasty surprise.
