About the game engine: The choice you make doesn't really matter, you can start learning an engine and then later switch to another since most skills you learn are transferable to any game engine. Having said all that, If you are just starting out I suggest you use unity since it has a lot of learning resources and it's a versatile game engine that is really good at making both 2d and 3d games.

I think it's important here to mention that game developers at some studios are responsible for creating their own in-house tools and game engines. This can be a lot of work and requires dedicated individuals to do the heavy-lifting. It may even involve unique programming languages, which have to be learned on the job. Building a game engine from scratch, along with a suite of tools, is no simple process - yet, it remains an integral part of game development. In these situations, teams of developers are often responsible for complex and innovative solutions that meet the needs of specific IPs. Their work, quite frankly, is comparable to sorcery.

Usually there are 3 top skills on game development that will save your ass. - develop thinking on performance: try to avoid bad performing operations (not optimized by the compiler). - be proficient on debugging and profiling: You will need to find and fix bugs in complex environments that can be almost impossible to find. Also learn how to use profilers to find bottlenecks in your code. - doing dirty hacks: This is the one nobody talks about but it's always there. If you have a deadline and you couldn't reach it, it's important to know how to hack some of the parts to look good enough but saves you tons of time (with the idea of revisit this once you have time again). If you can master these skills you will be so successful in the industry

Na minha experiência o processo de desenvolvimento de jogos é muito semelhante ao desenvolvimento de qualquer outro produto. In almost every lecture I give, I bring the following story. When I started with Software Development, sometimes I did some real complex functions and when I show to someone, they said "Oh, you did a button!". In Game Development, when I did my first Double Jump, everyone said "WOOOOW THIS IS THE MOST INCREDIBLE THINK I SAW!!!!" Game Development is a very satisfying job. There's some real interesting salaries, and on the biggest part of the time you will work on incredible ideas. I know that not everything are flowers, but overall, it's a job that, in front of so many, brings a lot of peace to life. And obviously, there is nothing in the world that describes the feeling of pride that exists in seeing someone facing your boss!

Before opening your IDE and start coding, try to find the best way for you to think. For me, I really like to get some paper and pen, and start to draw diagrams... it's a way that I develop for myself to check my idea for that functionality. If you are able to put your idea on something out of an IDE, it will be really easy to develop it with code. The developer community are pretty receptive, try to talk with other programmers, share experiences, ask some questions. And if you search for some code on internet, don't copy and paste. Open the code and your IDE side by side and rewrite the code manually, it will give you time to read it atleast and probably understand what's happening.

Developer Tips: How to Not Lose Your Mind A few tips for aspiring developers: Google is Your Best Friend: Stuck on something? Someone, somewhere in the world has probably had the same problem. Google it. Take Breaks: Your brain is a muscle. Don't overdo it, or you'll end up coding nonsense. Network: Join communities. It's not just about what you know, but who you know (and who can help you when you're stuck).

Take time before starting to write the code. Think about the architecture of the code, what's needed, how big the project is, whether it's a prototype, and if you need any libraries. These and more questions need to be answered before starting to write a single line of code. Specifically in gaming, I've noticed a tendency to have significant differences in the code between small games and large games. Basically, think before starting to write, or you will encounter problems later on.

I would say, take breaks between sessions. You can get so easily burnt out if you just sit down and try and push through 8 different sections of development. Your brain is going to get too exhausted and won’t be able to contribute its best effort to whatever project you’re working on. Take breaks, reset, do something you love!
