What do you do if you're considering a late career transition?

Many of the submissions here are already good but I think all of them leave out a key element: assess what you need in the entirety of your life, not just in your professional life. If your current work is unfulfilling or not meeting your family's needs or otherwise leaving something lacking, figure out what that is. If it's solely professional in nature (i.e. I need more intrinsic satisfaction from my work and doing XYZ doesn't do it), that's fine. But don't just assume a professional lens is the only way to bring this photograph into focus.

Appreciate whats gained and welcome the new! A late career transition means you are yet to find your calling or you are about to, this is really good as You’ll be spending the rest of your days working towards what you feel is good for you, which might have been missed due to circumstances or responsibilities! The most important thing here is to keep the acceptance of new learnings and appreciation of past achievements at all time high for a conducive and right mind space for success and an attitude to do it all over again if it doesn’t work until it does 🙂🌸

Embrace the unknown and take the leap! Comfort can lead to complacency. I was, like many, feeling comfortable in my safe world where I was often one of the smartest people in the room doing what I had done for over 20 years. Around 3 years ago, I decided to do something about it, accept there will be risk, pursue something new and be prepared to work at it and learn new things. So, I say challenge yourself, step out of your comfort zone, and pursue what truly ignites your passion. Remember, it’s often the risks not taken that we regret the most. So, go for it! 💪

Identify how your existing skills could transfer to a new field. Be open to upskilling or getting additional training. You don't have to make a complete career switch right away. I would also want to add that when mapping your new skills, setting goals on how, when, what and why to acquire the new skill set is important. You must always hold yourself responsible for the progress and strategic feedback. In the same vein, it's good to network, if you can get a mentor who has achieved what you desire, get in touch and let him/her guide you. It safes tons of time and effort.

If you were bold enough to lift and shift your career midway, you should also be equally fearless in owning the decision. For instance there was a person who tried to intimidate me in an interview asking why I transitioned in my career and asked if I am not clear about my career path. I didn't let it affect me and continued to look for the right fit in terms of my future organization which appreciated this transition and saw it as a value add. Also get a strong person to coach you through the process. I am lucky to have had some fantastic people coaching me throughout.

One thing I've found help as well is to keep an open mind. In this ever changing job market, look into options like consulting or ownership. With the wealth of experience that one has at that level they could offer services while it gives them flexibility. Especially the seniors who are almost nearing retirement.

Building Trust There is never too late when you are ready to dive in life. 🏄 While certain skills and experience might be crucial on some role and position, however, people trust people. Organization are more often to offer role to people who they can genuinely trust, while knowing you are here to growth at the same time.
