Ultimately, it all boils down to leading by deliverables and setting "the least inconvenient" option for 1:1 or team meetings - the rest can be perfectly handled offline!

Open communication, and being flexible is key. Also partnering up with the virtual team member to find a solution that fits both parties.

This question isn’t about time. It is about the desire of the mentor and mentee. We make time for those things that are truly important to us. I spent a lifetime of work with people in other time zones. I know how to build fully asynchronous communication & process in a remote team. For example, with my subordinate, I had zero voice meetings for 2 years. And it didn't stop us from building top apps in the domain. So if I take the question at linear face value, the operative word is "prevents" regular communication. Not "makes challenging" or "difficult", but prevents. This indicates to me that it is nearly impossible for them to meet due to time differences. That said, I'd support the mentee in their efforts to meet at times that may be inconvenient to them, such as midnight, in order to have the valuable interaction with the mentor. I'd ask the mentor to be cognizant and respectful of the mentee's time, and make sure the meetings are prioritized. Both sides should come prepared to each meeting with goals and expectations. However, it may be wise to consider placing with another mentor who has a more compatible schedule.
