I set a vision for what I wanted to aspire to do in business intelligence to make an impact. Then I determined what additional skills I needed. To gain the skills, I did “on the job” projects with the new skill that I felt would add value to the business. That way, you are learning using real world data and use cases. I learn better by “doing”. However, I also took coursera courses as it was a low cost way of gaining new skills. Last, even today, I always have a development plan. There is always something that I am looking to learn in the data space.

Processes usually require data as an input, create new data and supply this data to others. SIPOC diagrams often capture this. If we take the simple example of a change programme. Data can be used to derive insights, answering questions such as: “How many projects are pipeline, in progress or complete?” “How many are at risk?” “How many were delivered on time?” “Which resources are aligned to each project and how does their utilisation look?” Try modelling and visualising data on any use case you like, ensure it tells a story and is of value for you or your colleagues. First and foremost, consistency is key. As in any endeavour, if you want to get better, you’ve got to keep showing up. That might be an hour a day or an hour a week. Over time, the compound effect will start to build and you’ll see the change. I’ve worked with a lot of people in my career and it’s always those individuals who make small changes and stick to them over the course that grow the most. I’ll take someone who writes one blog article EVERY Thursday consistently over someone who fires out a blast of one every couple of days and then gives up after a month. Learning BI (or anything else that constantly evolves) requires you to show up over the long term. Do yourself a favour; make small habit changes and stay consistent.
