What are the best practices for securing Amazon S3 buckets?

Begin securing S3 buckets by enabling encryption, a crucial first step. Encryption ensures data is unreadable without the correct decryption key. Opt to encrypt data at rest (within the bucket) or in transit (during transfer). Amazon offers encryption services like SSE-S3 and SSE-KMS for this purpose. Alternatively, use your own encryption keys through SSE-C or client-side encryption. Deciding between Amazon's services or your own depends on specific security needs. Enabling encryption is fundamental in protecting data within Amazon S3 buckets from unauthorized access.

In all cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, azure, there is an option to enable default encryption for buckets created. So we should always enable and configure such options on priority. Also configure firewall and SIEM for logs that will help in incident management and threat response. Encryption should be enforced on bucket and data at the rest.

By default, S3 bucket encryption option was disabled. So we needed to select this option under the bucket properties, for example, AES-256. But now, all uploads to S3 are automatically encrypted at no additional cost. This is the simplest and straight-forward option that should be configured and used. For more control, use server-side encryption with AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) keys (SSE-KMS). This allows us to manage our encryption keys, key rotation and access policy grants. These may incur additional cost and is not turned on by default. Amazon S3 default encryption can be configured for S3 bucket by using AWS S3 console, AWS SDKs, AWS S3 API, and AWS CLI

Enable Server-Side Encryption (SSE) by default: SSE automatically encrypts data at rest using AES256 or SM3 algorithms, protecting data even if compromised. Utilize Client-Side Encryption (CSE) for enhanced protection: CSE encrypts data before reaching S3, providing an extra layer of security. Enable Block Public Access for S3 buckets: This setting prevents all public access to S3 buckets and objects, overriding any ACL or bucket policies allowing public access. Use IAM roles for access control instead of ACLs: IAM roles offer more granular and secure access control compared to ACLs, which are not recommended due to their limitations and vulnerabilities.

From an Enterprise Perspective, my default option is to create a Service Control Policy (SCP) that blocks creation of Public S3 Buckets. By so doing, you're sure there's a blanket access policy on any bucket created within the Organization. If there is a need to create a public bucket, the request should go through Change Management/Approvals.

Configuring access policies is a vital step in securing S3 buckets. These policies determine who can access your buckets and their permissible actions. Options include bucket policies, IAM policies, or access control lists. Policies can grant or deny permissions to users, groups, roles, or resources. Will be good to mention to use S3 bucket ACLs cautiously and prefer IAM policies and bucket policies for access control. By default, public access is denied but good to double check on the configs or track changes to these settings

Define and enforce stringent access controls using AWS Identity IAM to regulate who can access your S3 buckets. Fine-tune policies to grant the least privilege necessary for each user or system.

Configure IAM roles properly according to the need and this should automated via ticketing tools line JIRA. So whenever an employee need access of tool or account they should go with ticket process and the concerned person will provide access accordingly. Access management should be proper and access should be given according to the need.

Enabling logging and monitoring is a critical step in securing S3 buckets. These functions help track and analyze bucket activity and performance. Utilize Amazon services like CloudTrail, CloudWatch, or S3 Server Access Logging. These services collect logs detailing operations like access instances and actions taken. Third-party tools like Splunk or Datadog can be used for enhanced log data visualization and alerts. Logging and monitoring are key to detecting suspicious or anomalous behaviors. These behaviors include unauthorized access attempts, data leaks, or configuration changes. Effective logging and monitoring are fundamental for identifying and responding to security incidents in Amazon S3 buckets.

Amazon S3 access logs provide information about requests that are made to a bucket. These logs contain detailed information about time and date of access, result of action, requesting entity, what action was performed, etc. This information is useful in security audits and investigation of incidents by CSIRT teams. In addition, others AWS services like CloudWatch & CloudTrail can also be used to monitor S3 activities. CloudWatch enables rules and alerts to be specified, if a particular metric exceeds threshold. It is equally important to ensure that these logs are used effectively through data aggregation in SIEM and to ultimately help in identifying indicators of compromise or report on unusual or anomalous events.

Many clients I've worked with in the past think that once their data is in the cloud, they are good to go, safe, and secure. When that is not the case at all. Once it's in the cloud, the environment needs to be configured to make it secure. It's not protected by default. Ensuring the proper IAM, MFA, and encryption standards are in place and configured will be vital to keeping your data secure. Additionally, just because your company's data is stored in the cloud doesn't mean you are not liable if your data is compromised. No matter where your data is stored, the owner/company is ultimately accountable. Long story short, configure your cloud environment to meet your company's security standards.

Depending upon the usage, where end users can upload files to S3 buckets and also exposed to them via applications it's important to scan all objects for malware, ransomware, trojans and viruses. AWS provides antivirus scanning with Sophos and ClamAV engines to scan all files uploaded to S3 storage and quarantine malicious files. There are different scanning modes available using api, events, lambda etc. This is quite important for not only storage but protection of application and user systems.
