One more important thing is when the field geologist are engaged they should draw sketches of available exposure for better understanding of the person who will be using the data on software.

The very basic knowledge of all geoscientist need to know is how to integrate/convert hard data into digital data. Sometimes the only available data are only from printed reports, pdfs, print out maps, sketches etc. Good knowledge on using excel and PowerPoint to transpose your scanned images and tables will work to your advantage. Almost all problems can be solved using this two software. Tips: Having an Adobe Pro that lets you edit pdf documents will be your greatest ally. Good luck !

One thing I have found helpful was to have solid office software knowledge; Using such knowledge the geologist could get most of the benefits out of the field data in terms of time saving, cleaning data in addition to relational database integration with the whole system in order to get easy and handy inquiry answered in addition to automatic report generations.

Field data collection in Geology plays an integral role in terms of accuracy for reliability and dependability in decision making. It is very essential for a competent personnel to gather and keep the data safely to maintain originality so as to prevent "salting" which results in errors inclusions. I've been out of the geology business for quite some time, but honestly adapting data from the field to software in any industry can be a challenge. Depending on the data, sometimes the best solution can be to adapt the software to the data. Other solutions that I have used was to convert standardized field data to a more usable form through formatting process (so as to convert large amounts of data simultaneously). Finally sometimes someone has to struggle through adapting data manually, its time intensive but if no solutions exist. That being said there is no replacement for having standardized data collection forms or practices so that conversion and entry of data is ultimately easier in the long run, better efficiency and time savings.
