How do you follow up with contacts after a networking event?

Sending a personalized LinkedIn connection request after your meet someone at a networking event can serve two purposes. First, you can let them know that you appreciated their time, but second, you can formalize the connection and use LinkedIn as a way to keep in touch after the initial event.

Immediately following a networking event, take a moment in the car to jot down some notes about the people you met. Did they mention any special trips they were about to take? Did they talk about a conference they just attended? Where did they say they worked? Make notes of anything you promised or anything they requested. And, remember the little things so you jog their memory about your conversation when you reach out. Lastly, carve out time on your calendar to get those items sent and off your to-do list, and make a reminder a few weeks out to check back in with any folks who can support your search!

I urge my clients/candidates to check in with contacts regularly after the initial meeting so they don't get forgotten. So have a system that reminds you to do this every few weeks. Use a simple email newsletter that has a personalized-to-them subject line. Contacts DO care what happens with those who reach out to them -- don't make them wonder what happened to you -- so in your communication, share your excitement about talking with people at your target companies (name the companies) while offering help to the contact such as endorsing them on LinkedIn.

I'm not a fan of calling these "informational interviews" because they are neither, really: instead, they are about establishing a relationship, however deep the conversation goes. I prefer to call them networking meetings, and the goal is to "talk shop". Keep them to a half hour max. Bring your ideas, ask questions you'd normally ask when talking about work with a colleague, make sure to share 2-3 successes you enjoyed making happen so that your enthusiasm is visible. Your ask: To be referred to someone else the contact knows, to talk shop with *them*. Building trust this way is what leads to you hearing about unposted jobs that you might be a perfect fit for.

Express gratitude: Thank your contact for their support and offer to keep them updated on your application progress. Seek advice: Politely ask for insights or tips on the hiring process to show your interest and eagerness to learn. Request a referral: If appropriate, inquire if they can put in a good word for you to increase your chances of securing an interview. Share updates: Keep your contact informed about any developments in your application process, such as interviews or offers. E.g. After meeting a contact at a networking event, I applied for a position at their company and reached out to thank them for their guidance. They offered valuable insights into the hiring process, which helped me secure an interview and land the job.
