How do you become a curator?

Consider the following: 1. Seek internshipsto learn whether you like that type of museum (large/medium/small; history/art/historical society/library special collections), that type of work (curator/collection manager/project manager, and more), in that geography (rural/suburban/urban). Typically, the smaller the museum the wider your experience will be. 2. Contact internship coordinators to discuss a short-term learning opportunity and what you would like and ask them to help pair with someone on staff or recommend strategies. 2. Conduct informational interviews. Everyone likes to talk about themselves. Ask for some time of someone in a position you would like to ask about their journey, the job, and for their suggestions for next steps.

Choosing a niche as a curator involves considering your interests, education, experience, and market demand. Find a subject that excites you and aligns with your expertise. For example, focus on curating art from a specific region or style, or address social or environmental issues in your community. Please bear in mind you do not need to break your bank account, instead ask for help from your friends to stay low budget. For example: designing a flyer & posters, finding a sponsor for the drinks at the opening and transporting artworks to the venue. Be bold with the PR, exhibition promotion and marketing.

Curating is more than content expertise and picking objects for the public. But to improve here: learn about design and audiences, co-curating with communities, co-writing with multilingual experts (this will be a revelation). For object preservation: learn about cataloging, storage, and conservation for digital and analog objects. Consider adding public and/or digital humanities to a subject expertise. To stand out--get material culture and object handling skills.

It is important to understand what being a curator means. In general, a curator is responsible for selecting, organizing, and managing a collection of items. I see myself as a social media curator. In that context, I select and share content from various sources to create a cohesive and engaging feed.

There are different contexts of curatorship. In some cases, you have to go through an Anthropology, museology or art course to be considered for a position. Some galleries, however, accept apprenticeship and learning on the job as experience. Some positions like education officers can also be considered for curatorship.

- Get a good education with a relevant degree. - Apply for curator jobs. If you are lucky, you get a position at once. - If not try to get as much relevant work experience as possible and a big network to build your competence and your name. - Be good at marketing yourself. - Be ready to take a job as a curator assistant to learn the work. - Be ready to take a remotely located curator position as your first job in this role. Few people are ready to that and the competition is usually not that strong. - Never give up!

The nuts & bolts of being a Curator in any field are somewhat clear: A. Deep subject expertise B. Pretenatural grasp of target audience mindsets C. Desire to learn & implement from across categories of Curatorship. But what I find most enchanting is a visceral belief and adherence to near fanatical, unsaid rules that define your work. These are old, hoary and near-mythical, but their wisdom is intoxicating. Here goes...try and figure A. Museum curators will buy and sell ONLY within periods. If they sell an old master, then they will buy something ONLY from that period. B. Zoo keepers never steal animal food ( in India for sure). C. Woodworkers will always flatten protruding nails in wood they discard....

In my opinion, is advisable that at some point in your career as a curator, you might decide whether you will be a freelancer curator or work with an institution, gallery or nonprofit. Those career paths are not mutually exclusive, they could usually could be mixed and matched, however, if you have clarity about what curatorial career path you prefer will facilitate decision-making and career advancement in the long term.
