How do you apply agile principles to project monitoring and control?

In my experience, defining and prioritizing outcomes in agile projects is crucial for delivering value and ensuring project success. By focusing on outcomes, teams can align their efforts with the desired results and continuously measure their progress towards achieving them. It helps maintain a customer-centric approach and provides a clear direction for the project. For instance, let's consider a marketing campaign for a new product launch. One of the outcomes the team wants to achieve is to increase brand awareness among the target audience. To define this outcome, they can create a user story that states, "As a potential customer, I want to become aware of the new product to understand its features and benefits."

Applying agile principles to project monitoring and control involves adopting a flexible and iterative approach to continuously assess project progress, make necessary adjustments, and ensure effective control. A great approach is for the first iteration to be a proof of concept with some realizable benefits which is quickly followed by another iteration that provides the most highly prized benefits. This allows the team to work out some of the technical challenges early while not being bogged down with the most risky deliverables especially from a change mgmt perspective.
