How do you align data with institutional goals?

Aligning data with educational institutional growth involves using data-driven insights to make informed decisions to the expansion and improvement of institutions. Key metrics that indicate institutional growth, such as enrollment rates, student performance, graduation rates, faculty-student ratios, research output, and financial indicators. Decisions for resource allocation and investment for research, professional development of staff and infrastructure for growth and impact. By aligning data with educational institutional growth, can create a more strategic and effective approach to decision-making, leading to enhanced student outcomes, improved reputation, and overall success for the institution.

Defining goals holds profound significance in advancing educational equity within historically marginalized school communities. While data serves as a powerful ally, its true impact is unlocked when we align it with our institution's goals, driven by a deep commitment to justice and opportunity for all students. Specific goals outline precisely what needs to be accomplished, leaving no room for ambiguity. Measurable goals allow progress to be tracked and assessed objectively, ensuring that efforts are on track and effective. Achieveable goals set realistic targets that motivate and inspire, while relevant goals ensure that actions align with the mission and values of the institution.

May I suggest that the alignment of data with goals is a misnomer? You align two things by ensuring that one naturally leads to the other. For example, in any type of study, the methodology section aligns with the data collection section when what you said you would do in the methodology section is actually what you do to collect the data. The data collection section aligns with the discussion section, when you are discussing the data according to how it was actually analyzed and organized. The analysis and discussion of data are part of a methodology to achieve established goals. It is therefore the use of data that should be aligned with the achievement of your goals, since data may be used in different ways.

In the education service setting, we support educators in order to impact systems that improve student outcomes. Our sphere of influence is once or twice removed from student data. We gather engagement data (who’s present, who’s missing, how often?) We measure knowledge and skill gains (pre/post surveys). We use follow up data to identify and support application though consultation and coaching (what’s working, what’s missing, what else?). We collect implementation data (short cycle phases, starting small and scaling up.) Along the way, we look for impact (changes to practice, procedure, policy, & disaggregated student outcomes.) All of this data guides our practices, stakeholder engagement, and leads to differentiated service delivery.

I agree with Dr. Newton and will add this: You don't align data with institutional goals. You design your study to measure the efficacy of your institutional goals. Then, you analyze data from your study, and evaluate your institutional goals based on rigorous data analysis. That evaluation should lead you to revise your goals, or, more likely, to improve the implementation of your goals, and to study the changes you made. Kaizen--continuous improvement--should be the guiding principle for any organization.

The second step becomes the foundation of our transformative journey: collecting relevant data to monitor and evaluate our goals. To do this work well, we must embrace a diverse range of sources and methods, including surveys, assessments, observations, interviews, focus groups, and administrative records, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by our target population. In communities where members have experienced harm from their educational environments and may seek to protect their children, respecting the privacy and confidentiality of students' data, and being thoughtful about how their data story is shared, becomes even more critical.

Garbage in, garbage out. I was at a school where students were given incentives to grow 2 years in reading on an assessment. The pre-test was given in the first few weeks of school and post-test for the year was given a month before school let out. I noticed a few students would tank the test in the fall and score much better in the spring. They received a prize for two years growth but each spring they only scored about a year higher than the previous spring. The moral of the story is that you can't just decide what to measure, but think through how you can measure and how you can find multiple data points.

When conducting data analysis, remember to also conduct a bright spot analysis. Where are things going well, e.g. the teachers with the highest achievement scores or the grades with the highest attendance. Begin to analyze what makes these bright spots different from everyone else. Often times there is wisdom and expertise within a community, and it's essential to remember that even as we look to improve.

Analyzing and interpreting data is critical in advancing educational equity for Black and Brown students and students from traditionally marginalized communities because it provides objective insights into the disparities and challenges students face within our instructional programs. Through data analysis, we can identify opportunity- and achievement gaps, disparities in discipline, and inequitable access to resources, among other factors that perpetuate inequities. By taking time to unpack our data and look at it honestly and critically, we can better understand the root causes of educational disparities, allowing us to develop targeted interventions and policies that support, rather than hurt, students.

Communicating and sharing data fosters transparency, collaboration, and empowerment with the school community. By involving stakeholders such as students, teachers, parents, admin, and in some spaces, funders, we ensure that everyone is informed, invested, and empowered to promote change, in the pursuit of equity. Tailoring the message to meet the needs of the community ensures that the data resonates with each stakeholder, sparking meaningful engagement and action. Inviting feedback and questions opens up a dialogue, enabling a deeper understanding of the data and its implications. This collaborative approach leads to more inclusive and sustainable solutions for students, fostering educational equity and opportunity for all.

Data-driven action plans empower us to prioritize and address the specific needs of our diverse student population. They serve as a roadmap, guiding us in crafting evidence-based strategies that bridge gaps and foster equitable educational opportunities for all. Moreover, data plays a pivotal role in nurturing a culture of continuous professional growth. By reflecting on our practices and outcomes, we unlock opportunities for improvement and innovation. Before you even begin to consider what the institution’s ideas are, tead their mission statements. If you don’t agree with their ideas, don’t get involved! If you think it might be a good fit for you, by all means make sure you have relevant conversations with someone who knows!

I would add that doing the actual work should be done in teams and start small. Using a team based approach can help foster trust and gives people a voice towards the mission and vision. Starting small can help gain momentum by developing proof of concept.

A correct interpretation and acceptance of the data is crucial for learning, clarity and application of the data when drafting an improvement plan. Ensuring that team members and stakeholders also understand the validity and reliability of the data is paramount for buy in and systematic change, continuity or improvement.
