How can you use pre-trained language models for machine translation?

The pre-trained models are used for the downstream deep learning tasks. One important aspect about the pre-trained models are that it is available in binary format (.bin). The binary format of the model is obtained after training on huge data, performing the preprocessing and conducting extensive, several rounds of experiments with varying parameters (fine-tuning) and finalizing the optimum parameters associated with the model for the input data. Further, the model is saved (stored) and the pre-trained model (as it is already trained) can be loaded for future use as per the requirement. The pre-trained model is very efficient and helpful and saves the model building time, training time and resource utilization.

If you are a beginner, a nice start would be to use Hugging Face's translation pipeline. It has several models for different languages. While other experts will be able to give a detailed overview of the practical details, I would like to keep it to the point and add personal insights: language translation still has a huge room for improvement. This idea may sound novel when using English, French and some of the other top languages, but the gap is pretty evident when we use these models for languages like Persian, Urdu, etc having fewer resources/researchers working in them and as a result, lacking in quality datasets. So, we lack both strong enough pre-trained language models or the high-quality datasets to fine-tune.

Pre-trained models are trained over huge corpus of various languages and data sets. Since these are pre-trained models for generic NLP tasks, their final layer / output layers are vectors or embeddings. These embeddings are representation of the encoded "information", which can be used in the similar semantic construct, and hence these embeddings can be used for re-construction of text or sentences in different languages, which essentially makes it possible for macine translation

GPT Series (Generative Pre-trained Transformer): Including GPT-2, GPT-3, and GPT-4, these models are known for their language generation capabilities. RoBERTa (Robustly Optimized BERT Approach): An optimized version of BERT, fine-tuned with more data, larger batch sizes, and longer training to improve performance on language understanding tasks. BEiT (BERT Pretraining of Image Transformers): Introduces masked image modeling, analogous to BERT’s masked language modeling, for pretraining vision transformers. MAE (Masked Autoencoders): Utilizes a self-supervised learning strategy where parts of the input image are masked and the model learns to predict these masked parts.

Google has significantly contributed to machine translation with its pre-trained models. Initially, Google's NMT, using a deep LSTM network, powered Google Translate in 2016. In 2017, Google researchers introduced the Transformer model in their "Attention is all you need" paper, laying the foundation for advanced language models and machine translation. Subsequently, Google released the Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer (T5) and its Multilingual variant, M4. T5 streamlined training and deployment across various NLP tasks with a unified framework, while M4 expanded T5's capabilities to over 100 languages, enhancing Google's global language processing and translation services.

Pretrained LMs are used in translations as follows -Pytorch is a perfect framework for it -start with transformer based architectures due to its attention mechanism -the task is generative task so maintaining inference metrics like BLEU or Rouge would be reflective -pushing to a hub like tensorflow hub or hugging face (which i prefer ) will be better choice to just clone the model ones -different nuances from multi dialect languages would be a common inference criteria

begin by acquiring a parallel corpus with source and target language pairs. Choose a suitable pre-trained model like BERT or GPT and fine-tune it on the translation dataset, adjusting hyperparameters for optimal performance. Consider appending an encoder-decoder architecture if the pre-trained model lacks a translation-specific design. Evaluate the model on a validation set, and after fine-tuning, the model is ready for translation tasks. Post-processing steps such as detokenization, may be necessary based on the task and model, and continuous optimization can be performed for improved results.

Considerations involve continuous model updates, addressing ethical concerns, and adapting to specific language pairs and domains for optimal performance
